An app is a piece of software designed for a single purpose or a single function. An application, however, is a piece of software that performs a variety of related functions.

….some apps do multiple features, not just one purpose. Not much difference except that apps are much more compact than PC/Mac applications as most cell phones/tablets don’t have the same resources (memory, processor, additional hardware for example) to run/store those same programs as a laptop or desktop computer.

      Surely an app is software.

You seem to think that Chrome and Firefox on a phone are an app, while on a Windows PC they are an application. Or is it an app on Windows also, or an application on a phone also?
And would you call a software like ping.exe in Windows (which only pings) an app or an application? Or none of the two?

A related question: would you call a widget on your phone an app also or is that a third class of software? Google (on my phone at least) makes a difference between them (different tabs in Android Lollipop),

Your definition is too unclear to be of any use, I think.

Application is also called as application program or application software designed for a single purpose or a single function. Apps are a form of software but not all software is an App.
