    IT Staffing

    Locked

    by turch ·

How do you determine how many employees you need on your IT staff to maintain your systems, which include over 550 workstations, 20+ servers, over 700+ users and 7 remote sites? I have a staff of two, which includes myself, and we are completely drowning in work to do. Where can I find justification for hiring more staff? What does everyone else do? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks all!

      Document everything

Document everything you do including how long it takes you to close a trouble ticket. Track it for a month or so, then show it to the boss and find out what kind of turn around he expects. Also, the ratio of techs to user/hardware supported depends on exactly what you support, pc’s servers, VOIP, web, etc.

      Establish Metrics

      Every business is different.

The amount of staff you need depends on many factors.

      Cost of downtime for users.

IT projects and there business value.

Other value added tasks that IT could perform.

Sit down with your manager and establish what the acceptable response time for various downtime situations and delivery time for projects is.

Then, measure department performance against the goals.

Another thing to watch is how much extra work you and your staff take on. If your doing things that should be done by the user or another department, you need to cut back on being nice. Users need to be required to submit requests through proper channels. If for no other reason than to document all of the work you and your staff perform.
