Laptop can not find hard drive

By tnt696 ·
I purchased an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop. It came with Windows Vista operating system. I didn't like Vista, so I used a program called Disk Kill to delete everything on the hard drive. I reformatted the hard drive, and tried to install Windows XP Pro. The install could not find C: drive. Is there anything I can do to get Windows XP to recognize the hard drive, and install XP ?

Thank You

Similar problem with Dell Inspiron

by Mayhem1969 In reply to Laptop can not find hard ...

When I upgraded the HDD in my Inspiron (Windows Me not XP mind you)I got the same prompt. My Inspiron did not have an A drive, so the computer kept labeling my C drive as the A drive and my CD rom as the C drive. I actually had to install what can best be described as a virtual A drive to get my hard drive recognized as C.

Windows XP should have formatted the disk for you. Are you sure its properly formatted for XP?

You need to install a SATA Driver

by OH Smeg In reply to Laptop can not find hard ...

Because XP doesn't support SATA HDD's natively. You will need to look on the Acer Web Site and find a suitable driver if they have one listed or if not one from one of the many other places that provide Drivers. You will also need XP drivers for all of the hardware on the NB as well and then you can slipstream a Install CD by following the directions here

While this article is mainly aimed at including SP2 with XP the procedures are the same to include drivers that are required for your hardware.

Sata Driver

Came across this post from another thread re: installing XP over Vista. May help as OH Smeg says.

You may need to install the SATA drivers manually before loading XP.

Answers & Limitations of the Acer Aspire 5315

by betaman In reply to Laptop can not find hard ...

tnt696, I have some good news and some bad news. The good is I can tell you exactly why you are having problems down-grading your Acer Aspire 5315. Congratulations, you have purchased one of the first of a new series of laptops that cannot be down-graded! The Acer Aspire 5315 was designed to be so dependent on Vista that there are certain XP drivers that have not been created for that hardware. You could get around almost all of these except for the CPU fan control. When down-graded from Vista to XP the CPU fan fails and the PC overheats! I researched this thoroughly and found the only solution is to contact Acer and request the Vista restore DVD (15 or 20 bucks) and put it back on Vista. Also the 5315 can only accept 2 GB of RAM tops! Accept for older software incompatibility Vista actually is very intuitive and has an industry leading search engine. If you can't find the power settings just type power in the search field just inside the Orb (start button) and a link straight to the power settings appears! Also the Network and Sharing Center is a realtime way of troubleshooting connectivity issues. I believe Vista gets a bad rap because most users hate learning curves and it requires a little effort to operate.
