laptop cannot ping server but can ping other pc's on same network

By rschmid ·
Ok this is gonna be a long one but I'm at wits end.

Have a laptop (dell620) with docking station.
The laptop drops the connection to the server. Ping comes back "request timed out".
I then ping another machine on the network by HOST
and get 4 good replies.
I then ping the server (by host) and get 4 replies.
After 15 minutes or so the connection drop again to the server.
When i know the machine is NOT physically connected to the network I could ping the laptop (by host) so I figured there was a issue with duplication of the host. Not so changed the host name on the domain and same issue exists.
Removed the laptop from the docking station and restarted it with all connections. after 15 min the server drives were un available again.
Tested the cable and it checks good also changed ports on the switch with no luck.
Turned off the firewall (XPsp2)and also no luck .
What gets me is I can ping a machine on the network other then the server and the connections to the server drives are magicaly restored.

the user tells me that nothing has been changed by them. this machine was off line for a week as they were traveling for business. they had not connected to any networks outside of the office as well.

Ok tech republic HELP!!!!!
