Laptop keeps freezing every couple of seconds

By mvparker79 ·
The other day my laptop started to freeze up for about a second every few seconds. If I'm moving my mouse around it will stop then show up on the other side of the screen. If I'm typing a whole bunch of words and not watching what I'm typing, I'll look up and see that I'm missing about every 4th or 5th letter.

I swapped out my memory and that did nothing. I tried blowing cool air in the vents hoping that the CPU was over heating, but that did nothing as well. I checked the temperature though using "Core Temp" which are as follows:

Tj. Max: 212 F
Core #0: Low=129F High=156F

Core#1: Low=124F High=145F

Also the cpu usage appears to be normal. 95% is idle. I booted in to safe mode and I get the same problem. I went in to the BIOS settings and from trying to scroll around with my keyboard, I can tell that it is freezing in the BIOS setup as well. I decided, despite my better judgement, to format the hard drive even though I knew in my gut that this was most likely hardware related and not software. Formatting did nothing.

Here is my hijack this results:

Are you positive this occurrs in BIOS setup?

by seanferd In reply to Laptop keeps freezing eve ...

The cursor skips around or hangs?

If so, it has to be a hardware problem.

Did you see mouse or keyboard options in BIOS? Check to see if they are too sensitive.

Do you use a wireless mouse and keyboard? Otherwise, how are the pointing device and keyboard connected? (Built-in, wired, wireless (what type?)). There could be interference.

You could try re-installing the drivers.

Mouse and keyboard may need cleaning. Connections could be loose, the internals may need to be cleaned, or there could be a failing part. Graphics card, USB, hardware conflicts or failing hardware are possible problems.

Check the memory.

You can test the memory by running Windows Memory Diagnostic that can be downloaded from If memory problems are found, try re-seating the RAM. If it doesn't work, replace the defective RAM.

You can use the Hard Drive Makers Testing Utility to Test the Drive which can be downloaded from below.

<a href="" target="_blank"><u>Western Digital</u></a>
<a href="" target="_blank"><u>Fujitsu</u></a>
<a href="" target="_blank"><u>Seagate</u></a>
<a href="" target="_blank"><u>Samsung</u></a>

Let us know how you get on.

You can also

try resetting your BIOS back to defaults.

Try running Ccleaner......

Download here:

Save it first then install it then run it, this should iron/cure some of your ill's.

Also run a Defrag:
to clean up your hdd.
This will/should make it run smoother.

Still freezing

by mvparker79 In reply to Laptop keeps freezing eve ...

I'm positive this is occurring in the BIOS (which I did set to default and it did nothing) when i'm in the bios setup my options are at the top which i can scroll through really fast using the arrows on the keyboard. when i press to the right, i get the same kind of freezing.

my mouse that i use is the laptop's touch pad and no plug in keyboard.

I also don't think it is a memory issue because i've tried 3 sets of DIFFERENT memory. But as soon as i can burn the windows memory test to CD i'll try it just for grins.

I also tried ccleaner and it did nothing.

and lastly, i don't know how i'm going to replace the processor seeing as this is a laptop.

Since it occurs in BIOS

by seanferd In reply to Still freezing

No need to try anything in Windows, if you are certain. It has to be a BIOS or hardware issue.

Are there touchpad and keyboard settings in BIOS? Try adjusting them. Setting to default may not help at all. Check for sensitivity or conflicts. (A touchpad is not a mouse, for sake of clarity.)

Memory - were the memory specs exactly the same across tests? You may need to ensure proper timing, etc., in BIOS.

Replacing processor (or whatever) - you'd probably have to have the laptop serviced, then. (But we're trying to see if this is avoidable, right?)

Still, cleaning out the keyboard is your first, best bet. Hold keyboard upside-down, **** out with a can of compressed air. If you don't have a can of air handy, try gently shaking it first, then blowing. (Don't do this directly over your eyes...)

Try disconnecting the hard drive

by Jacky Howe In reply to Still freezing

and then enter BIOS and check to see if the problem is still there. From my experience CPU's either work or they don't.

You could even try reseating the CPU, apply new grease and checking the fans for resistence by giving them a quick spin. If they spin freely they should be OK.

Edit: forgot the grease

You could just have a crap keyboard ...

Judging from your last comment.

So I pulled out the hard drive and booted in to the BIOS settings. It appeared that this fixed the problem. But when I put the hard drive back in and booted to the BIOS again, it appeared that the problem was gone. When I booted in to windows, sure enough the problem was gone. I'm not sure why but everything seems to be just fine now. I guess the hard drive must have needed to be re-seated.

Thanks to everyone and all their help!!! Seriously, you saved me about $800.00 :-)
