Locked

Laptop not shutting down

By mpd881 ·
My company has an HP laptop that was purchased about 1 month ago. All was working great until two days ago when it stopped shutting down.

WHen you shut down, it gives you many messages "Ending Program, Please Wait" then "Program Not Responding" and give you the "End Now" or the "Cancel" buttons.

I get up to 12 of these messages for the different programs that are hanging. Everything from ATI Tray Icon to Explorer.exe. I tried uninstalling a couple of the problem programs and removing a couple more from msconfig. Those files are no long on the list, but it is still hanging.

When I finally get it to the explorer.exe box and end that one, it shuts down fine. How do I get these programs to stop locking up? I can't find anything they have changed in the past few days, there are no viruses and I ran both Microsoft antispyware and Spybot and found nothing.

Thanks in advance

sounds like there are processes still running when windows thinks it has shut them down... Good ole Billy's software!!!

Try a Defrag first of all (the simplest solution is usually overlooked) then check all the process running in task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and compare them against a process library
http://www.processlibrary.com/
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/
And see if you have any malicious processes running. If so get a decent AV & a decent spyware remover like Spybot S&amp (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)

If you're still having problems then you may want to look at regisrty editing, however i would avoid it wherever possible with such a new system.

I tried all the free antispyware programs I knew of and they found a couple programs, but nothing out of the ordinary. I removed them and the problem persisted. Then two days later I received a call stating the computer shutdown fine. I don't know if it was a piece of spyware or something else. You gotta love computers sometimes.

THanks for all the help
