    Login Problem

    Locked

    by petadove ·

A user on a Win2K Domain has been having problems when logging in and I wonder if someone has come across this situation before. Here is the scenario:
THe user logs on (username and password) and the loading your personal settings dialog pops up, followed by a blue screen that goes no further.
To fix the problem, I logged on to his computer (I am a member of the local Admin group) and copy his profile to another location, then delete the troubled profile and then have him log in, which is successful. However, when he shuts down and tries to logon, the same thing happens and the process of copying the profile starts all over.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can stop this from happening once and for all. Incidentally, this user has loads of icons on his desktop.

I would take a look in the event viewer for any USERENV events for help in narrowing down the problem. http://www.eventid.net is where you can lookup the events.

Do you have roaming profiles? That is, of course, one way settings can reappear.

I had the exact problem. I use roaming Profiles. So I logged on as Local Admin and deleted the local Profile. The I went to the server where the profile is stored and RENAMED the Profile to Profile.OLD. Had the User Logon again and this created a new profile and that fixed it for good. I had to redo all the settings for the user but that’s only a 10 min job..
      Hope this helps.

P.S: If you use roaming profiles and your users switch between NT4 WK and win2k Prof, that will corrupt the profile.

Is the user changing the display settings?
I have had this in the past, the user would change thier display settings to something that will not work on this computer. After the next restart this will be the setting for this user, and since it doesn’t work this is what comes up.

In case you don’t have roaming profiles….instead of copying back the old copied profile after deleting it off the machine, let him logon, create the new profile, then ONLY copy one part of the old profile at a time and login after each time you copy over a part. It may be something trying to load on the desktop, or something in the other areas of the profile blue-screening it. Good luck!

From the description of the problem, I think there is a program that loads at startup. click on start go to run and type msconfig at the open and click ok. Go to startup menu and uncheck all the start up items and apply the changes. Reboot the pc and log in again. I think this might just do the trick. Now, selectively load back some of the suspicious startup programs to see the one causing the problem. Good luck

Thanks to all. These were all workable solutions but I found out that the using was copying his old settings to the new profile each time. He was told not to copy the old settings and the problem has been resolved.
