Lose internet connection periodically.

I have a Speedstream 5260 DSL modem hooked to a Netgear MR814 wireless router. I use WXP. My ISP is SW Bell (AT&T) I lose access to the internet about three times a day. To regain it I need to either repower the modem or the router or both. How is this overcome?

the line filters on every phone in the house?
How is the wireless signal strength? Is the router secured? (Neighbor's wireless interfering?)
There is always the possibility of plain old bad wiring somewhere, inside or outside your home.
