LPT1 and Windows 95

By joe landwehr ·
Installing an HP DeskJet 842C printer on a Compaq Presario 972 CDS computer. Install program from HP won't see the printer connected to LPT1. Can't print from Win95, but can from DOS or the DOS Window in Win95.

Have installed Win95 Service Release 1 and set the parallel port to "Standard" from ECP (recommended by MS KnowledgeBase). Still won't use LPT1. Win95 Device Manager reports that LPT1 is functioning properly and has no device conflicts.

Have downloaded the latest install/drivers from HP's site.

Where do I go from here?

Have you tried changing the type of connection for LPT1 in the BIOS? There are different settings in there, and as stated in an earlier response, most HP printers need to "talk" to the driver in Windows. If the port hsa the bidirectional communication turned off, it will not be able to do so.
Good Luck

First make sure you have a bi-directional cable. If not either purchase one or turn bi-directional printing off by the hp configuration tool, which I believe is in the windows\system directory. Should be hp***cfg.exe.

Try reinstalling the lpt1 port in windows. Then remove all the printers in the printers folder and reinstall the software, using the install program, not the add new printer wizard.
