mapping SQL to an object can make you tie yourself to the database you start with, as the tip warned. Hibernate, despite the hacker mentality of the product and support site, at least supports several databases directly by letting you specify the "dialect" to use when you configure and use the product. It creates the SQL to match the dialect. Changing databases is as simple as pointing to a new JDBC driver and specifying a new dialect.
