Based on the information given, I would advise the following:

      1) Delete your temp files and Internet cache. To delete temp files, do a search (or find files depending on the OS version you are running) then delete them from the search window. Internet Cache, go to Internet Options from your Control panel or Tools | Internet Options and select Delete cookies and Delete Files. When selecting Delete files, also delete offline files. This is also a good privacy measure to keep sites from tracking your Internet movements.

      2) Remove (by running Add/Remove Programs from your Control Panel) any unused programs to free-up disk space. The more data stored on your hard drive, the longer seek times you experience.

      3) Empty your recycle bin.

      4) Defrag your Hard Drive. Why? Over time and usage, files become “fragmented,” this means pieces of data are scattered over the disk and takes longer for Windows to find what it needs to execute commands. Defragmenting puts everything back together like in an organized filing cabinet or folder. I recommend Norton System Works which has a utility called SpeedDisk, more powerful than the Window’s Defrag util.

      5) Consider ramping up your RAM, especially if you’ve recently upgraded.Depending on the OS/version you run, it could be demanding more and more swapfile access from your drive. The more RAM you have installed, the less caching Windows does, also less “hard drive thrashing.”

Good luck, hope this helps! 🙂

      Regards,
      Jesse

Also, if you’ve recently upgraded, your processor may not be up to the task. For instance, if you’ve installed XP and run a PIII 350Mhz machine, it will be quite slow. A processor upgrade may be something else to consider.

But try these steps in order, start small. 🙂 It may be just a simple fix, but then it may not. Again, good luck.

      Hi
Usuallu this happen for many reasons:
      1. Viruses, Adware or trojen horses. check your machine.
      2. A device has a problem or a network problem.
If you have a problem with a har disk or a CD-ROM or network drive then try to scandisk for bad sectors and unplug the device causing the slow. try it one by one. You may also run out of a space on your hard disk for the swap space(virtal window memory) check your hard disk free space.
3.Unplug the network cable reboot and see if it is the network card or a cable or a router problem. It may try to connect and there is a problem preventing it, so it keep trying agian and again.
4.Overheating problem use a free software such as MBM5 to check for over heating.

5.You may have a bad RAM chip, unplug them one by one and see which casing the slow down.

      6. provide more info if you think it may help us help you.

      Good luck

      Mohamed

If you have just been using your system and you have not been installing any new programs or been downloading a lot of files, then
      1st ck for viruses
2nd ck your memory, if you have been adding alot of stuff to your computer you made just need some more memory

Just to add to what everyone else has recommended. Here are a few things that I have found that causes slow down.
      – “Fast Find” loaded. Go into your Task Manager and see if it is running. If it is, end task on it and try accessing what you were trying before and see if it helps.
      – Old disconnected mapped drives. This will slow your system down.
      – Other services that are no longer needed, but still trying to access resources (i.e. Novell services, etc…)
      – Try logging on as another userto see if it has something to do with a corrupt profile.
