Merry Christmas: So What Did You Ask For?

    Locked

    by tomsal ·

Merry Christmas Everyone…I hope everyone has a great holiday season and that the new year is better than the last one in all ways.

So, just as a little curious “fun” — what is everyone hoping to get for Christmas?

In reply to Merry Christmas: So What Did You Ask For?

I requested the following for the holidays:

      X-box.

      HALO 2.

Advanced order on DarkWatch (X-box game. Cowboys versus vampires in the Old West. ‘Nuff said!)

      Half-Life 2.

A Joe’s Cartoon SupaFly doll. (Who can resist a doll that says, ‘Who’s you daddy? I’m yo daddy? Why?… [the rest of the comment is amended due to there being ladies that see these columns and comments!] In addition, the doll says, “You suck man!” which is always a good way to blow off steam at the end of a tense meeting..ha-ha.)

      Spider Man 2 DVD.

Lord of the Rings Directors Cut with the “daddy is geeking again additional commentary by daughters” bonus options.

        HL2 is awesome

        by tomsal ·

        In reply to Requested Gifts

I got the collectors edition of Half Life 2, completed after 2 1/2 weeks of pretty straight playing. Excellent game, in fact if you don’t get it for Christmas I suggest picking up a copy for yourself — its that good.

I have Halo 2 also, but didn’t really put much time into it yet.

I asked for the new LOTR Rts game for the PC (forget the real name of it) and Pacific Assault.

Beyond that I too will likely get a bunch of socks and underwear and the seemingly standard sweater.

        🙂

Read your post and smiled. I wouldn’t mind Half Life 2. It looks pretty awesome. I have LOTR Battle For Middle Earth and completely recommend asking for it for Christmas. It plays unlike any other RTS out there and your heros are those from the game. You can play good and evil campaigns. A lot of fun and endless play time! Legolas is the best hero I have had so far.

Happy Holidays Everyone! I have asked for:

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB (unlikely but I asked)
        X Box (more likely)
Fable & games if I get said X Box
warm socks (I hate cold feet)
        Chocolate
        New U2 CD

Beyond those material things I look forward to some time off with my wife and some quiet relaxation. I fancy a bit of hot chocolate, and long naps in my chair. : )

        MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

In reply to Merry Christmas: So What Did You Ask For?

…I’ve asked for a Devil Duck external drive. It’s a flash drive embedded in a Satanic-looking rubber duck.

I would also like Santa to bring me some of those prohibitively-expensive, noise-cancelling headphones from Bose. If they work for airplane pilots, they might cancel some of the noise at work!

In reality, I’ll probably wind up getting a nice selection of bath salts, mittens, and fuzzy sweaters. Sigh.

Bose has a reputation among audio engineers as promising big and charging big and not delivering. There are other noise cancelling phones out there that work at much less cost.

          Bose

          by oz_media ·

          In reply to Thanks…

Bose has a reputation of excellence at a price. For speakers they have a real niche with a few models, but most like the 901’s etc can be duplicated in North America at a fraction of the cost. if you really want Euro speakers, Mission and Polk are fabulous for depth, dynamics and clarity!

For headphones I would suggest Sennheiser or AKG. Every studio I have EVER been in has nothing but AKG’s , two models (known as Gold or Silver) depending on whether rock or classical.

The GOLD’s (I think they are AKG 240’s) are unvelievable for audio clarity but are merely a monitor and add no effect or color. The Silvers (forget the model #) are good for rock because they work with a higher crossover frequency.

I just bought a really cool MP3 player (with enormous ear buds for Dumbo) but got a pair of Senn’s to compliment it, sweeeeeeet!!!

To give BOSE some credit though, the Bose Wave Radio cannot be beat. I’ve seen a few copies that don’t even touch the surface of what Bose has done with their bidirectional systems.

Also their little 3″ cube speakers will always get guests wondering how all the HUGE sound is coming from such tiny cubes, and a sub of course! 🙂

Sorry to jump in, but I sold high end audio for a few years and work in the music/recording industry so I am very passionate about studio quality sound.

          Thanks!

          by salamander ·

          In reply to Bose

I will take a look at these products…I know less than zilch about audio. What I am looking for is something that will cancel out what I could diplomatically call loud ambient noise…like people yelling. It’s a bonus if the headphones make my Pink Floyd collection sound great, too. Thanks for the info! 🙂

Sennheiser now there is a name that most

          by hal 9000 ·

          In reply to Bose

Just do not hear off to often they make some great microphones and quite passable headphones for the high end market.

At one radio station where I went to do an interview they treated these things like $20.00 K Mart specials. There was another Karaoke guy who used Sennheiser Mic’s and threw them away when he thought that they didn’t work all that well. Some People just do not know when they have a good thing.

Bose speakers never did much for me but then again I’ve had the good old AR’s to play with and use them at home for a half way decent sound and the AR 9’s I just know will never get stolen as they are far too heavy to even consider lifting {It’s the only way I’ve found that prevents the wife from rearranging the furniture.” But I just can not believe the out put from a small pair of 18’s these are at best what should be cheap nasty but have a very nice sound that is unbelievable for their size. Admittedly they lack the Bass range but then again they only have small drivers and can not pump all that much air around but they do make for a very good pair of fill in speakers.

          Col

          AR9’s!!!

          by oz_media ·

In reply to Sennheiser now there is a name that most

As soon as you mentioned AR’s I thought of the AR 9’s I have stored at my mothers house (too big to pack when I moved and too expensive to take a second trip on the ferry eith them.

For those that aren’t familiar with AR9’s, picture a large DESK that plays your music.

A good 4 1/2 feet high, 5″ wide and they weigh at least 150lbs. Furniture to say the lest!

I had mine hooked up to my Harman Kardon PM660, I used to get friends all the time who would spend 3 or 4 grand on some wild system with so many flashing lights it took 400 watts just to get the thing lit up. They would listen to mine, a simple champange gold BOX with a single power button and they’d want to cry.

My favorite answer, “That’s really cool! Do you look at your music or listen to it though?” LOL 😀

For smaller tune up speakers, I prefer Mission 700MKII’s though, sweet and clear with a decent midrange.

          Really?

          by jkaras ·

          In reply to Bose

I got Bose AM-7 speakers and their wave radio. The only issue with the wave radio is that I bought the version right before they added the cd player, man that steams me, I always buy something too early. I get their advertizements in my mail every week reminding me of the new version, explitives soon follow.

I am curiuos about your posting on the 901’s? To me they are the best sounding music speakers I have ever heard and always have had them on my wishlist. What speakers in your opinion are comprable or better? I would like to take that sound challenge.

I love my cubes, they rock!! Some people comment, no highs, no lows, gotta be Bose. But they are just iddiots!! I do hate their sub, its too passive, so I bought a Velodyne sub. Oh mama its my pride and joy!!!! Its got a downward firing 15″ radiator, and a 12″ sub, and it only cost me $500. It was my 2 years ago Christmas/birthday gift. It made all the difference in my home theater system, a must have. Bose uses 6 ohm frequency rather than standard 4 or 8 ohm which is their secret. Boston Acoustics copied their secret and I love their stuff!!!! What do you think of MB Quart? Everyone gushes over them and they are too pricy but their is a really good sale of half off on car front stage speakers that I might just buy for future endevors.

          Polk SRS series

          by oz_media ·

          In reply to Really?

Yes they cost a bundle, make that two or three bundles, but Sir Mathew Polk hit a good one in the SDA-SRS series about $1300- $1500 each speaker on the bottom end.

You will be hard pressed to find a retail outlet that carries them, cost is too high but you can order them from Polk Audio.

I am VERY big on Mission, they have the most beautiful build and crossovers deigns.

BUT, if you want a REALLY cheap alternative that sounds like an expensive Euro box, check out Paradigm. Canadian made so they are DAMN cheap but my god do they ever rock out! Not a good classical speaker, but if you are into rock, they…..rock!

The 901’s blew me away when I worked in an audio, but as time passed, I ralized that other were catching up and meeting the same ambience that the 901’s prvide for much less money. B&W makes several good mid range equivalent’s for less money.

But since 1995 I have seen many speakers stand up to 901’s, before that (mid to late 80’s) 901’s were unstoppable. With surround sound systems, BOSE is losing it’s market though, people don’t need 2 directional speakers anymore, they have a roomfull of speakers nowdays. Also, with 901’s they are great in the sound room, but not when you add furniture.

You need to install the stereo and THEN move all of your furniture in to compliment them, otherwise the directional ‘bounce’ from the rear facing drivers is dead.

I used to demonstrate this in the sound room by simply moving another set of speakers into the middle of the room (not playing any music, just as an obstruction) and the sound from the 901’s would be lost instantly and as you moved the ‘obstruction’ around the sound room, the 901’s would change sound as if by an equalizer.

I used to work near a “Beauty Shop” or whatever they call those things. It at the very least was an education as when you walked past you could hear all types of things.

The most common was women screaming or moaning in pain. On one particular occasion I just had to ask as I knew the girls that worked there fairly well I just poked my head in through the front door and asked what the hell they where doing?

The response was some sought of wax and I just came to the conclusion that most women who go into this in a big way are masochists at heart they know just how much pain that they are going to experience and they continue to go through with it. Personally I think they get off on the pain!

There can be no other reason.

Not as nicely as Karate Kid but they actually claim to do it for US…the men in their lives.

I think it is utter BS, they do it for themselves because no many men are allowed to have a Weedeater plugged in beside the bed.

Sure they do it to make it nice for us, but why would THAT matter unless they wanted us to want them? Therefore they do it for themselves and say it’s for us just to sound good. It’s self satisfaction made to appear as if they did US a favour.

“Look I got a bikini wax, why don’t you take out the garbage, rake the lawn, fix the car, put a new handle on the cupboard and MAYBE I’ll have a special something for you later!”

Now watch the guy run himself ragged getting chores done in anticipation of later! When later comes, it is off their mind now but not yours of course, you want to show YOUR appreciation for the handy work of the folicular overhaul but when it’s YOUR turn? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

A GUY on the other hand would just whip it out and say “HEY LOOK AT ME, WANT SOME?” No secret tricks ro treats.

Women have to make it seem like they did something special and secret for US.

Now I am dismissing the fact that this is Colin we are talking about here and most likely these Sheilas are in for a moustache wax!

Sorry mate, have a wonderful Christmas with your wife and loved ones.

Seriously, these women should have a little dignity, it’s just a little hair, nothing to cry over.

          by jamesrl ·

          In reply to Sounds familiar

One thing I learned to do was use the gift of time….

In the working world, I didn’t always keep up my contacts. When I was laid off, I made the time to re-connect with a few people that had dropped off my radar. It didn’t result in any job contacts, but it could have, and it helped me get into circulation.

I found a networking club to be helpful – we had speakers on various job hunting strategies. Again it didn’t help me find something but it kept my moral up and I did help some others, which did a lot for my self esteem.

As for asylum in Canada, its not perfect. Doctor visits and hospitalization are covered, drugs are not. Luckily my wife’s doctor provided us with lots of samples of her medicines to help us get through.

The employment market in Canada is, like the US, highly regional. Things do seem to be picking up in Toronto. Since I’ve taken a full time job, I seem to get lots of calls from headhunters.

Good luck. I suggest checking out http://www.aneliteresume.com – he is a speaker who has helped me improve my resume. He has some good samples on his web pages.

In reply to Keep on going

          Thanks again James…

I’ve done just about all of that except for the networking groups since there weren’t any nearby. I have about 5 or 6 different resumes that get customized for each target, I’ve had a lot of input on my resumes but have found that my original one gets the most response still to this day. I’ve networked with all my ex-coworkers, contacts, sales-reps, friends, people I meet, green grocers, etc…

Simple truth is, I can get contract and temp jobs when they are around to be had, but without benefits and the sporadic nature of contracting, it’s just not stable enough and doesn’t provide the medical benefits nor paid vacation time I need to support my family. (wife needs expensive diagnostics and surgery, thus the interest in Canada).

Ah well, like I said, thanks for the advice, appreciate it.

I used to attend a variety of user group meetings for various products as you mentioned. But since things have gone way down hill I just don’t have the resources to do so, plus with all the moving around we do now it’s just not practical to keep trying to find new ones in each area.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will keep it in mind.

I don’t know if you’d be interested, but I do know that both of these companies have a TON of government contracts that they are seeking candidates on (They all have portions of the US Army contract to install Active Directory):

        http://www.ciber.com
        http://www.anteon.com

Absolutely the best of luck for yourself and your family in the new year.

This contact I’m on is up next month so I’ll keep them in mind, thanks.

I just wish I could find something permanent so my kids could go to school again and have a sense of home instead of being stuck in a hotel room, so I could have a slight sense of stability (even though there are no more permanent jobs anymore anywhere), so I could get medical benefits again and paid time off so my wife could get better again.

But, we all do what we must until we have freedom to do what we want.

          Thanks again.

I only got three pairs last year and by about March I was due for some more, so the last 9 months have been….uncomfortable?!

That and world peace of course.

Simple ole me, I just want undies and world peace!

I sure hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday with all those they love, and a few they don’t even like but still have to put up with once a year.

I think that is the answer to world peace.

How can you even think about setting off a car bomb if you are wearing a new pair of frillies? You would be to darn giddy to want to fight anyone.

Instead of bombing them, lets drop clean undies on them. If that doesn’t work, try dropping dirty ones instead.

Which makes it even more of an impossibility. Now if you said my FRIEND'S wife won't, then she was just playing games, YOUR wife and it is the truth. And she's right, nobody does that anymore...out of her pool of married girfriends. Funny but I rarely see guys saying that it is out of style when the wife asks for reciprocation. A classic

        by oz_media ·

        In reply to Lamborghini Countach

the white 25th anniverasry model was my fav. I don’t like the North American imports though, too high off the ground and they have big ugly bumpers.

The old Countach bory style was a classic, it broke my heart when they stopped making them! I have built a kit out of a Pantera for a guy several years back, I worked with a machinist who made kit cars, what a blast! You should see some of the Shelby Cobra’s he did, simply immaculate. Pantera was loud and heavy though (much like the band, God rest Dime Bag) with that typical Pantera suspension height issue that make it look raked like a kids car in high school.

But all in all, that old and now dead Countach body style was the best and most exotic of all. The Diablos just don’t cut it,I’d rather have a Healey.

I still have an 8×10 of the white on white 25th anniversay model though with full ground effects. Hey we can all dream! (But a mechanic with a white leather interior? I think not! 🙂 )

I agree the ealier models had the best design.

For my 2nd choice a 1971 – yes 1971 Australian built ‘muscle car’ that revolutionised the car industry in Australia. Today the most sought after car – cost was $6000.00 in 1971 now sells for over $150,000 ( only a few cars appreciate )

The 1971 Ford Falcon XY GTH0 Phase 3 – take a look at this classic!!!

I am actually a Ford specialist and have always LOVED Ford’s. Which was an easy thing for me to fall into. I sold Ford trucks, can’t lose there. My first car was a ’67 Ford Cougar with a 351. Mu first, second, third and now FOURTH trucks have ALL been Fords. I tok three years of a six year apprenticeship at Ford. I worked as a journeyman for Ford. I even owned a WICKED little Pinto. I got ahold of a post production model (early ’81) Pinto SSE. I ended up putting the 351 form the Cougar in it when I put a 427SCJ mod in the Cougar. It twisted the frame, popped BOTH rear windows, the glass hatch and broke two suspension bolts off the line within two days of finishing it. woops!

The ONLY Ford I don’t like, with the exception of ’56-’57 is the Mustang. I can’t stand them. They are not anywhere near as fast as people THINK they are, they are nowhere NEAR as efficient as most engines on same class performance cars, in the 70’s they were just plain UGLY (as most cars in the 70’s were except early Mopars).

Ooooops, sorry….I got running on about cars, gotta stop that!

        Same complaints…

We still get people who refuse to pay the bills because of some feature they want. Not a feature that was discussed when the contracts were signed. But something that has come up subsequently. Some of these are legitimate, some are just excuses.

And MS regularly drives software firms crazy.

Don’t you. Both customers and MS who are constantly changing what they think that they want.

I can remember one customer recently who insisted they knew exactly what they wanted which started out as 3 units and ended up being 10 units it nearly drove me mad every time that I went down there there was something else to supply. Just as I was thinking I was getting on top they added more then changed the basic working type.

For what should have been a simple little job it sure turned out to be long and hard to get by with ‘Actually come to think of it they still owe me some money for the latest upgrade” well I suspose it’s only into 90 days now so you can’t rush these things can you?

Have a Very Merry Festive Season and Happy New Year and a drink or two for me.
