Missing Autoexec.bat and Config.sys

By bmcelmury ·
I recently reformatted a older Gateway 120, reinstalled Win95. And to load the drivers for the 4x cd-rom I need to add lines in the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys. Problem is they are to be found any where. I received this system and reformated, restalled Win95 and everyhing was dandy. Then a coworker upgraded to Win98, and that is where everthing went screwy. Since then Win95 is load and working along with all the drivers except the cd-rom.

Any Help?

Brian

IF the system boots up click start-programs-accessories,then system tools on the menu bar click on the tools menu and you can run system file checker and it will give you the option to extract the files you need from the WIN98 CD.

um... if it is an IDE CD-RIM drive you won't need a real mode driver - so you won't need to touch the config.sys or autoexec.bat.

If it is not, then you will have to get a driver. There is a zip file with lots of CD-ROM drivers in it called CD-ROM God at

You can also get lots of CD-ROM drivers at ftp://ftp.accomp.hu

If you have an IDE CD-ROM and it doesn't work then open up the machine and check if the CD-ROM is plugged in correctly, if it is check the jumper settings on the drive.

There are a number of questions that are open
1 The 2 files are not normally hidden and must be in your c root dir. unless you're a dual boot win95&win98.
2 If not using a dual boot what upgrade path was used as win95 should not install over win98.A 98 upgrade would allow 98 to install over 95
3 What method was used to revert to win95 don't recall if the upgrade would allow an uninstall.
your simplest solution is possibly save any data files you need and using a boot disk reformat the drive,C: assumed and reinstall win 95.Insure the boot disk has cdrom support if your bios/cmos does not support it,which brings us to question 4
4 What motherboard are you using and is it properly configured

:)
the config for Autoexec.bat looks like:
path c:\dos;c:\nc\c:\windows;
add some more if u use plug-ind for adobe
(c:\program files\abobe\plug ins) or to other resources ..debugers.
Run MemMaker to obtain the config for your comp..one more tip "leave the settings as they r" after u run memmaker..and"read carefuly when dealing with memmaker"
2nd tip "U dont need autoexec.bat and config.sys if u use programs running windows"
have phun!

First thing to keep in mind is that Win95/98 do NOT require Autoexec.bat or Config.sys to run. These two files are used to load various DOS Real Mode drivers and can be used but again are not required.
Because you mention your CD is a 4x drive it is very likely it is not "directly" supported by Windows PnP and requires a driver be loaded. If this is the case the CD drive should have come with some driver diskettes which will install these drivers.
I would probably recommend however to update to a Windows 95/98 compatible drive. At todays prices you will not only solve your install issue but also get a 40x or faster drive resulting in much better performance.
