Monitor won't power on at startup

By tmbearden ·
I just changed a HD on an old pc and installed Win98se. It works fine with exception that the monitor will not power on at startup. I have to manually turn it on. It will power off at shutdown. Any suggestions.

If another monitor works okay on the system, then the video and internal connections are fine.

Either the motherboard is sending out a refresh rate that the monitor does not support.

Or, the monitor is set to a specific refresh rate, and will not switch to the "standard" mode that the BIOS uses at POST.

Looking at the HP MX90 manual, try this:

Restoring Factory Adjustments
To restore all parameters to the original factory
1 Turn the power off.
2 While pressing the Plus (+) button, turn the
power back on.

Then see if the monitor functions at boot.

If the monitor now turns on properly, a mode was set that prevented the monitor from operating at the resolution and refresh rate used by the BIOS.

No luck resetting the factory defaults per your instructions.

I tried resetting the monitor to the factory defaults, but it still did not power up at boot.
