My question is likely very elementary to most of you, but here goes... I have a DELL PC with a Intel MB and 1.7 processor, 400 front side bus. I want to use a faster processer (2.4) but it wouldn't work. I am seeking advice and location of stats on the MB / processor relationship and compatability. The 1.7 processor is either a Northwood or Willamett processor, and I believe that match is my problem. Can someone help.

Thanks.

Yes, there are tools to help identify a motherboard.

Check out www.motherboards.org
or www.wimsbios.com

Keep in mind that nearly ALL manufactures of OEM motherboards offer NO support to the end user.
This is per the contract that they have with Dell (or whom-ever)

If your system was near the top of the line when you bought it, it is VERY likely that 2GHz is going to be the fastest CPU you can install.

Unless needed to fix a hardware issue, Dell is not apt to release a new version BIOS just to allow users to install faster CPUs.

An option may be a 'custom' BIOS from a 3rd party such as www.unicore.com
Expect to pay around $70 for a new BIOS.
