If the same problem is occurring on two different systems, you want to look at what the two systems have in common. If you’re using the same mouse, I’d try a different mouse.

The most common cause of mouse-related lockups in my experience is a serial mouse that has an interrupt conflict with some other serial device (usually a modem). If it’s a serial mouse, you want to see if anything else is using IRQ4 (COM1) or IRQ3 (COM2). If it’s a PS/2 mouse, you’ll want to check IRQ12. If you can keep it running long enough to check Device Manager, check for resource conflicts there. Also, you might try booting into Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs.

That’s a very curious problem… good luck with it!

I would start looking at similarities between the two computers. Do you have the same applications installed on each? The same drivers? The same hardware? You’ve already identified some of the differences, now see what is the same and eleminate that sameness on one of the computers and see if the problem goes away.

Another thing to look at is virus protection. Do a complete virus scan of both computers. You may have inadvertently transferred a virus from one machine to the other while troubleshooting your problems.

      Good luck

Try to slow down your video acceleration. Go into Device Manager,Performance tab, Graphics. Move the slider to the left one notch, to slow down the acceleration. Reboot. See if it helps. If it happens again, go back and move the slider one notchto the left again. Reboot, and check it again.

      Good Luck

If you can keep it working long enough, go to your mouse manufacturer’s web site and download the latest driver.

I’ve seen power problems with this diagnostic, especially if both of the computers are at the same place (electric breaker). Try swapping a power supply, or borrow a UPS battery or line regulator. Also, i’ve seen hard drive having a hard time ‘waking up’ from power saver. Can try to deactivate the feature into the BIOS and Windows.

First of all, if you are using serial mice, check to see if there are conflicts (you didn’t mention the make/model/year of your computers but on some of the older ones, esp. with peripherals attached, you may run into conflicts)…can you assign themouse to another com port? If so, does the problem still exist? Do you have modems and/or other attachments that you can play with the assignments or the IRQ’s? I would keep checking the System in Control panel and look through all your irq’s and devices to see if you have any conflicts or anything you can manipulate. (Just make sure that you keep track of all your changes so that you can change it all back if you need to!) It is a long frustrating process, I know!

Also, on some older computers, I have found where com 1 is reserved for a serial mouse, which locks up the IRQ for com 3 as well.
You might be able to set a jumper on the motherboard if you have that kind of capability in the specs on your computer.

Don’t know if this will help or not.

First of all are you dual booting or are the systems on separate units? All of the previous answers have been great but let’s look at some of the simpiliar things. what type of systems are you using? Check to see if your sims/dimms are compatible and fully seated (pull them and reseat them) I had a consulting customer who added ram to his unit hisself and mixed edo/non-edo in an AST 75mhz Bravo. The unit continually hung because edo wasn’t compatible w/ the unit. I would’ve thought the unit wouldn’t boot at all but it did. Once I took the edo out and re-seated the right ram it ran fine. Also while you’re in there w/ the case off do the normal maintenance, Blow out the case, check all the plugs, cables & jumpers to insure they’re correctly and fully seated. Also a lot of people don’t check to make sure the cpu/heat sink are fully seated, Heat problems don’t necessarily blow your cpu immediately. Having done all that, put your case back together, check all the external plugs, plug thepower plug back in a

By the way, I hope you’re using enough ram and have enough disk space.

I don’t usually suggest this, but have you run Norton Anti-Virus on both of these computers yet?

It’s a virus for sure. Do a full debug, fdisk, reinstal on both systems. Use this link for a page with step by step debug scripts to remove your virus. http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?DN=TT1011054
