Mouse Moves By Its self

On a WIN98 PC the mouse will move and drop down boxes will start appearing for no reason. Three(3) different mice have been tried. A virus scan has been preformed and no viruses where found.

I've seen this sort of thing happen with computers near strong electromagnetic devices...

Do you have a microwave, television, etc. near the mouse? Is it possible that the floor is vibrating (near an elevator maybe)?

Recommend you move another known working computer to this location (or move this computer/mouse to another location) and see if the problem only occurs in that area or if it follows the computer.

If it's location specific... you need to troubleshoot the location. If it follows the computer/mouse, then I'd look for a bad mouse port on the computer.

Boot to the Safe Mode.

If there?s no problem in the Safe Mode, then one of your hardware (HW) or drivers may be the culprit.
Take out all your PCI or ISA cards except the video card.
If the problem persists, make sure you update the video driver. Try a different video card if the problem is still there.
Then add one HW at a time to isolate the root of the problem. Update the driver or replace the card if necessary.

If all else fails, reinstall Windows.

Go to www.ebay.com...for about $12.00 shipped you can get a KEIO by KYE Systems optical mouse w/ a driver disk w/ the correct drivers. Actually Win98SE & greater have the correct drivers. You get rid of ever cleaning a ball & rollers while @ the same time can kiss that mouse pad goodbye.

Crap on the rollers & ball or bad internal swithes, will cause that kind of thing along w/ routing the mouse cable near other cables. (like power cables).

Good Luck.
