My LAN disapears after I setup the VPN?

By gkcomputers ·
Hello people,

I have a 2003 server with exchange 2003 installed and am running DHCP. I have 2 NICs installed but am only using one.

All is working well until I configure the VPN. Once the VPN has been setup the LAN is lost. Workstation can't connect to server, no browsing, can't ping server's IP address etc. Once I remove the VPN all is back up and running with no problems.

At the risk of going bald sooner than my time I was woundering if anyone might offer some suggestions?

VPN kills browsing, e-mail and some LAN connections

by michael In reply to My LAN disapears after I ...

Similar problem - any solution?

I recently installed VPN on my desktop (XP Pro SP 2) and laptop (XP Pro SP 2) in order to support a client remotely. As part of the setup I had to change my subnet from 192.168.1.x to 10.24.1.x ... so far so good.

Except that when VPN is connected I cannot use local web browsing or e-mail (Firefox, Explorer, Thunderbird).

And even when VPN is not connected, my laptop cannot see anything else on the LAN ... whereas File Explorer on my desktop shows the laptop in the local workgroup, but cannot ping it and if I try to drill down into it in File Explorer I get a "\\Lap2005 is not accessible..." message.

Interestingly enough my old NT box works with the XP desktop just fine... and so does the Macintosh OSX laptop.

Any clues would be appreciated.

when using VPN you need WINS to resolve local lan resolutions : configure WINS on your local network.
