Need feedback: "People" page mock-up

By sMoRTy71 ·
OK, as promised, I am posting a mock-up of the upcoming page that will allow you find search and browse for member profiles. Basically, the page will show you a search interface (where you can find members by alias), a list of most-popular interests and technologies (where you can see all members who share that interest or technology), your full contacts list, a list of recently-update profiles and a list of the Top 10 members (with a link to the Top 100).

The "View all interests/technologies" links below the top interests/technologies section will take you to a page that displays all of the member-submitted interests, the number of members who share that interest and a checkbox to allow you to add many interests to your profile at one time.

The idea is to make it easier to find members to add to your Contacts and to find Interests and Technologies to add to your Profiles. A secondary goal of the page is to demonstrate that this is an active community with high-value members. Take a look and let me know what you all think:

We are tentatively calling this the "People" page; however, I am not sure that is the best name. I don't want to call it "Members" because that sounds like it is a member's only area. And I don't want to use "Directory" because that sounds like nothing more than a list of member names. Another idea, which I don't hate, is the name "Profiles."

So, in addition to giving us feedback on the page itself, I would love to hear ideas about the naming of the feature. People? Members? Profiles? Something else?

Let me know. Thanks,

OZ have you notice just how good I've been lately?

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to Nah

I have not offered to blow anyone out an airlock or anything similar.

Anyway how is the non paying Technical Service for TR going? Are you now getting all of your questions forwarded to you without a problem? :)

If you are at all concerned about your e-mail address appearing to the sender just setup a Hot mail account and change your TR e-mail address to that. That way you can limit the incoming e-mails or just ignore them all together. No bad idea leave things the way that they already are and just get on with answering all of the questions so the servers at TR are free so we have a flawless time while here!

Someone else sent me a direct quetsion. I just pointed to Tech Q&A and explained that I didn't know the answer anyway, which I honestly didn't.

I did ask what made her decide to peer mail me, and she said she read a few ansers I had provided to similar questions but nobody else had a contact link 'active'. THis firther enforcing the need to make SOME formof contact mandatory or at least strongly recommended. Now if TR was to hide addresses on both ends and act as the middle man as they used to, and if they made it clear it is anonymous, people wouldn't have such a problem with accepting contacts.

Either that or at LEAST make it madatory tat IF you want to help in Tech Q&A you have an active ocntact link or 'IF you wish to email someone YOU must also have an active link', the latter isn't so bad!

You just need to act like a T-rex and have a personal posse of velcioraptors at your beck and call for them to be respectful.

Maybe this could be a new project management philosophy called, "Eating the competition! The South Seas Project Management Method."

That idea!

Of course I would have to modify it a bit as eating my own staff would only create more work for me and I already don't have enough time in a day to do all I need to.

But beating them all up a bit would do no harm at all. Perhaps even revoking their ability to steal my classic cars to use as work vehicles which I never intended them for would not go astray either. The only down side there though is one of the guys got T Boned by a semi in the right hand side and sought of walked away from the crash which I'm certain he would not have been capable of if he was in the supplied car as it is a recycled pet food container.

Exit 1 irreplaceable 280SE Mercedes but keep a staff member actually come to think of it "I WANT MY MERCEDES BACK!" He would eventually have got better even if he did have a severe limp and it would have taught him to look before he drove through a green light, fully loaded semi's are just not the thing to tangle with they to me fall into the same category as trains you don't want to be anywhere near them at all! :)

A new car should be the ideal and not a 30 something year old Mercedes as a work vehicle. It's a pity that the guys don't see it that way, now if I could only understand just what it is that they see in my collection of Classic Cars and Motorcycles? It actually got so bad last week that one of them took my wifes Mercedes for the day didn't I get hell for that! He had some lame excuse that he had to pickup a printer and he needed the two door for it to fit inside. It would certainly have helped me no end if he hadn't just walked up to my wife and told her that I had told him to get her keys and he gave her his keys. I of course knew nothing about this at all but I got the blame anyway.

Alright - 2 things

1) I like the people page... originally (a couple of months ago) the peer directory was a barren wasteland; it has improved ten-fold and I like the link to the idea

This one could use a little work, and is not all that vital to the profile page anyways. I don't care for it at all. Sorry guys. I'm being honest. A few tech related defaults are fine, but we were getting out of hand with the options available.

I think the interests list grows as people enter their own interests in their profiles. In other words, I think it's a dynamic listing of interests in use on the site. If that's the case, I rather like the idea. There's some redundancy as a result, but that's to be expected (like the Linux/UNIX, Linux, and UNIX interests).

Yes... it's ok, but the original list posted had a few hundred options. It's best that we keep it down to 20-30 or so.
