Network Bandwidth?

By jlbecker67 ·
Our network is connected to a 128k frame relay circuit for internet access and we are having problems with connection speed. The provider says either we are maxed out on bandwidth or we have a network problem. I want to be sure my end is ok before upgrading the circuit. How can I troubleshoot the speed and bandwidth of my network? I have downloaded some demo programs for analyzing networks, but I really don't know how to interpret the results. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

This problem can be resolved very simply. If you have access to your ISP connected router, simply enter a show interface command on the serial interface that is directly connected to your ISP. Do this at a time when you've traditionally seen this network congestion that you mentioned.

The output will show you exactly what you need to know. If the interface is showing close to 128,000 bits/second for the 5 minute input and output rate, your ISP link capacity if being overwhelmed. If not, thenyou should investigate your own network. Collisions and broadcasts would be the first things I'd look for.

Try turning off all workstations with the exception of 1 (for internet connection). Then try and run this link (take out all spaces)
http://computingcentral.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp

That will give you an approx speed from your provider. You should see somewhere close to 128k. Then I would try and turn on some workstations and see if it bogs down the network. Good luck.
