Network not sharing though set up right

By winmorgan ·
I have a desktop PC running Windows 2000
and a new Dell laptop running XP Pro. I?m a
novice with Windows, having used Mac for 6
years. I managed to get both computers
networked OK by installing NetBEUI (even
though XP doesn?t care for NetBEUI), and they
were sharing files fine and suddenly one
direction of the connection stopped working.
Both machines still see each other, but, if I?m
trying to access things like the Desktop or My
Documents of the desktop machine from the
laptop, I?m suddenly getting messages that
access is denied and I may not have
permission. I?m the administrator and only
user of both machines. The desktop has it?s
hard drive, and all of the pertinent subfolders
set to sharing with no restrictions. (As I say, it
was working until last night when it stopped.)

I can still swap files by accessing the laptop
via the desktop and copying files that way, but
I?d like it to work both ways, which it was doing
just fine until it stopped. The only thing I did
before things stopped working was install MS
Office 2000 on the laptop. NOTHING has
been changed or altered on the desktop
machine, and that?s the one the laptop is
telling me I don?t have permission to access.
There are some folders I can access on the
desktop via the laptop, BUT NOT the ones I
want. For example, I can access all the
Program files on the desktop from the laptop,
but not the Desktop or My Documents.

Any ideas?

Thanksfor any and all help,
