Network printer disappears

By twest ·
I have some Windows 98 machines in remote offices. In one office, the network printer ocassionally disappears from the user setup. Then when the user goes to print something, they get an error stating that they need to setup a printer before they can print. When they try to re-setup the printer, they get an error that the printer is offline. After rebooting the computer, the printer re-appears. This happens randomly. A user can print one document just fine, and receive the error on the next document. Can someone please tell me what is going on here?

WIndows 9X has problem with more than a certain amount of devices on one setup. I have found that issue true on users that have more than 6 printers active (online) at one given time. Delete any printers that have been removed from the network or the users local setup and monitor the issue. This is kind of like the nic's in win9x. more than 4 nic's usaully causes the lat few to not bind to the protocals.

- What type of network?

-What type of OS?

depending if the printer has a directjet card and you used the hp jetadmin administration utilities to set the printer up on the network, I would needmore information.

the admin$ is looking for the local password. When setting the username and password in the sercurity section of the job ( right click on the server name. security) put in the domain name/username and the password. This is one fix. you can also go into the services for arcserve tape engine /database engine/job engine and change the local account to the same setup I mentioned earlier.

I have had this same thing happen to me before. The printer was set on IPX protocol. When I switched to TCP/IP, the problem disappeared and it has worked fine ever since.

I am already using TCP/IP exclusively.

Not sure how your printers are setup but, we had that problem when we were using FASTPORT print servers. It would happen mostly in the morning when users are logging in and allocating resources. We perceived it to be a contingency thing however now we have migrated to Intel Print servers and no longer have this happening.
