Network Printing

By Judy ·
I have an HP laserjet 4000 printer that was installed as a shared printer. Then we made it a network printer by installing a nic card into it, and using Intel Netport Express. We run Lotus Notes 4.6.2, Crystal Reports 7.0, Office 97 suite, and NT 5.0.Lately, my end-users are attempting to print something usually on Word or Lotus Notes and they get an error " Printer queue is full" and it cancels the job. I've checked the printer queue and there is nothing in there. I'm stuck and am not surewhy it's giving out that error. There are only 6 PC's printing to that printer. It should be able to handle the load. I temporarily re-routed 3 of those PC's to print to other printers and its still giving that error. The only new thing that I have done here is that I installed Service Pack 4 for NT. Help???

If there are only 6 ppl printing to this printer I would only connect it to the NT Server?/Workstation? and share it out from there. That would allow NT to control the print queue. I have an HP 4000 setup exactly like this (except with the HP JetDirect drivers) and it's shared out to 45 or so ppl and I haven't heard of any of them getting this error!

I would attach the printer to a print server and install everything on there. I have about the same setup as you. (same printer, same network, etc..)I do suggest jet admin as well, but defintely use a print server, an old machine works fine. You could also reinstall the software for a quick fix perhaps. I have 10 users printing to the printer and no problems.

Along with the excellent suggestions to use the HP card and Jet Direct software, you should uninstall the previous sets of drivers and software from the users' computers. The printer control and maintenance modules which were installed on each of the computers when it was a shared resource often conflict with the drivers for a network resource and attempt to report status for a printer that isn't really there. Also, make sure that the network printer is the only remaining available setup for this printer on the user's printer lists. In most cases, you can do a simple uninstall of the HP printer from each computer. We had several similar errors until we unloaded the modules from each computer.
