    Networking Win98 with WinXP

I am having problems networking together Win98 and WinXP machines. I am trying to transfer huge files (over 3 GB worth) that won’t fit on disks from my XP to my 98. I connected the two computers using a crossover cable. My workgroup names are thesame on both machines, and it appears as if the network has been setup, however I don’t see the other computer on the machines. That is, on the XP, under the Workgroup HOMENETWORK I only see the XP machine. And on the 98 under the Workgroup HOMENETWORK I only see the 98 machine. Has anyone accomplished this task before? Please help! I’m running out of space on the XP (only 8% left — not even enough to run defrag!!) and I want to transfer this stuff before it crashes!

Try accessing it just using the Run command under the start menu… type “\\computer_name” to connect. Sometimes I find that this works even when they aren’t showing up in Network neighborhood.

Also… make sure both are on DHCP, or have static addresses that are similar, or install IPX as a protocol.

Can you ping the other machine both ways? WinXP to Win98 and get a reply? And Win98 to WinXP and get a reply? If yes, then networking is basically setup.

This is a temporary solution to access shared resources on the xp machine from the 98 machine:
      1) Open a command prompt on 98 machine.
      2) Enter “net view \\ip address of xp machine” (without the quotes).
      3) Next enter “net view \\name of xp machine”
      4) Close the command prompt
      5) Repeat the process on the XP machine.

This ONLY works for the current session. You should now be able to access XP shares in 98’s network neighbourhood. It’s a problem with NetBIOS naming; as I do not have XP in front of me, I cannot tell you how to turn on NetBIOS in WinXP.

But inn Win98, all you need to do is enable the Microsoft NetBEUI protocol

(All of this is because your two OSes are not true servers and they need to be “broadcasting” their presence to each other… the MS NetBEUI protocol does this)

When you ping the machines back and forth… if one of the computers is in the wrong network, then do the following

If the one of the computers has an IP address of 169.254.x.x then that computer is receiving an IP address from Alternative Private IP Addressing (APIPA), which uses non-routable IP Addresses between 169.254.0.0 and 169.254.255.254, and a mask of 255.255.0.0.

You can edit the registry to prevent APIPA by creating a DWORD value for the value ‘IPAutoconfigurationEnabled ‘ at the following registry key and initializing it to 0 (It’s not there by default and assumes a value of 1). HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\CLSID

Then you will need to assign a static IP Address tothat computer and place it in the same network as the firts. Maybe XP computer = 192.168.1.1 / subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the 98 computer as 192.168.1.2 / 255.255.255.0.

Here’s a link that takes you through the process, step-by-step on all versions of Windows.

and make sure there is a ‘share’ on the machine you want to get the files from…like, on the 98 machine, right-click on the c-drive, pick ‘share’ and accept the defaults…
if you don’t see ‘share’ when you right-click, you’ll need to add the network service: Microsoft File and Print Sharing…right-click network neighborhood, pick properties, add service….

One other thing besides having a share in place for access is that the username and password used to log on to the Win98 machine needs to be created as a user account on the Win XP machine. If you just start up your Win 98 machine and it starts up without a logon prompt this will need to be changed.
