    new cpu causes unwanted reboots

    i have an aopen ak72 motherboard thats suppesed to take up to 1gig slot A athlon.
    i currently run a 500mhz chip and its fine.
    i bought a 900mhz chip and when i put it in it cause the comp. to reboot out of no where. ( niether chip is thunderbird) bios reads the 900mhz chip correctly with the correct core voltage but seem to be running cool. i have 384mg pc133 ram. WHATS THE FIX TO THIS PROB.?? LOL BESIDE JUST USING THE 500MHZ CHIP?

      I would recomend the latest bios update for that board-
      That should take care of the problem
      on average with about 80% of motherboards they say to *** speed+ if you do the + it usually requires a bios update-

      You may need to up grade your power supply. If the chip is cool (less than 130 degrees is cool) and the board is set correctly and there has been not ESD (electro static discharge) damage to the CPU then the wattage on the power supply is to low. Try 350-400 watts. Trust me, I have seen this fix it!

      Both other answers can be right but is the mainboard a softset or is there jumpers? If it’s softset then you need to go into the bios and tell it theres a faster cpu. If it’s a jumper main board you need the manual for the board to switch the settings. Aopen has all their boards on the web site in PDF format. I ran across the same thing last week and all I had to do was f2 into the bios and set the cpu speed. But the newer cpu’s need more power like 300 to 400 watt.

        i had already went and bought a amd certified 300watt power supply that at least got the chip to boot and runn for a bit but not stable. in bios i cant change the cpu to a highrer setting

      since you are using a 300w p/s, my other guess is that the p/s may be flakey or going bad. if you can’t try another p/s (for comparison purposes), you can enable the alarm on the the hardware monitoring program in the bios. if the alarm goes off just before the reboot, you have your answer.
      another experiment would be to pull some memory off. this would reduce the power draw and possibly point to the capacitors on the mobo as being unable to handle the full load.

      All of the supplied answers point to basically the same thing. Settings. You went from 500 to 900. You stated that you could not change the settings in the bios, but the bios was identifying the CPU. Did you change any pins on the board. To change from 500 to 900 requires changing five, maybe six pins on the board. You have an inner core voltage, an outer core voltage and your bus voltage. They must match or the cpu will overheat, results: reboot. Return to the Aopen web site, downloadthe settings for the board, paying particular interest to the cpu speed settings and this should solve the problem.

        its a jumperless board.
        in bios you can change core voltage and cpu speed (the multiplier) i have tryed both the same affect or no boot at all

      Since none of the above answers actually fixed the problem, there is the posibility that you have an incorrectly marked CPU. Try lowering the voltage .2 on each reboot until you get the board stabilized. I ran into this on an 800 machine. The CPUturned out to be a 600.

      If this is a[slot a] you cannot use the plastic bracket under the fan it causes premature boot-ups. I have a 900 thunderbird and this info. was in my instructions.
