    new mobo/cpu, inst. modem, no power???

    So, I am baffled… I have just put together a mobo/cpu in its case, powered it up w/ just the RAM, and video… worked perfectly.

    THis is a wierd situation, because after i had gotten the good result from the first boot, i put in the drives, etc. Again, all worked perfectly. I had already installed XP pro and XP office. So, i go to put in the soundcard, still worked good. Put in the modem, then get no power at all. I have switched power supplies, tested power supplies. I have reset the Power switch cable on the MOBO, just to make sure there was no bad connections. I have reset the Cmos battery, hoping that I had some wierd IRQ problem. I have taken all of the cards out except video again, no result.

    I am lost. I ahve seen fried mobo’s/ cpu’s before, but not after finishing a simple modem install. I cant figure it out. I have gone as far as reseating the CPU (celeron 900).
    Anyhelp would be appreciated. Thanks

      If you go to http://www.motherboards.org, they can answer your question perfectly. They rule when it comes to assembling your own computer.

      Very simple. Take out the last thing that killed the system. In your case the modem. Are you sure the modem is good. If you ARE sure then try a different slot or try a different modem. hjs

      Assuming that you have AGP video, check that your AGP card is still firmly seated in the socket.

      Installing the modem may have flexed the motherboard just enough to allow the video card to slip up out of the slot.
      It only takes a few 0.001″ out of the slot for an AGP card to not function, and lock up the PC.

      If that isn’t it, remove and reseat your RAM modules.

      Some cards don’t fit well or have been butchered, this could short the MOBO or PS. Does it powerup after the modem was removed? Try unplugging the AC cord from the PS, some wont reset till all power is gone.

        I have removed everything.. even the ram, just hoping it would power up and give me post errors.. nothing.. thanks though…

      I might repeat here that i have reseated everything and that includes the ram, I am not getting video due to the whole “not getting power thing.” I am down to my last probablity, and that is that somehow, someway, by putting in the modem, I shorted something out and fried the mobo…the motherboards led shows power though, just not anything else..

      As mentioned in som of the other comments you may have flexed your motherboard seating the cards. make sure the motherboard isn’t grounding out on the metal case. Somtimes those plastic posts don’t do a good enough job of holding the board off. give the motherboard a little push from the uner side and make sure taht the soder joints with the wires running through aren’t grounded anywhere. I have had this happen before with an AMD motherboard. Hopefully the shorting didn’t damage anything.

      The leds on the Motherboard are on because the power supply is supplying the 5V standby power.

      If you have a voltmeter, or an oscilloscope, check what is going on at the Power switch pins, and Pins 5, 9, and 14 on the ATX power connector.

      I have revived a couple of locked up systems by re-moving both the CMOS back-up battery, and disconnecting power.
      In fact, if power was still connected when you removed the CMOS battery, the CMOS was NOT reset.

      If you have another machine available, try you PS in it and the old PS in the new machine.
