New profile and contacts about to go live

By sMoRTy71 ·
Just wanted to give all of you a heads up that the new profile page with the contacts functionality is about to go live any minute.

So please take a minute this evening to fill out your interests, your bio and add some members to your contacts list.

BTW, to add members to your contacts, just go to their profile page and click the "Add to my contacts" link under their photo.

In our next phase, we will allow you to search for members by alias (instead of hunting for them). For now though, you will need to go profile to profile.

Let me know what you all think. Also let us know if you find any bugs.

I posted this in Jay's thread.

But want to back up my concern by posting it here too.

On the Discussions and T Q&A tabs, our actual names are used.

On the Profile and Contacts tabs our alias is used.

I recommend that you use our alias on all 4 tabs.

While I have nothing to hide, I prefer using my alias on the site.

Wow! Good catch!

by sMoRTy71 In reply to Alias

That is most definitely not supposed to happen! That's part of the reason we have truncated all of the aliases that are e-mail addresses. We wanted to make sure that no one's personal info was exposed (unless they chose to expose it).

We will correct this problem ASAP. Thanks for pointing that out.

This fix is going to be deployed around noon EST.

Thanks for reporting that one.

Thanks for correcting the error.

Aside from the error, as I get used to it, I do like the changes to the site.

Good Job to all.

I don't suppose I could prevail upon youse guys to provide some way for linebreaks to appear in the "Professional Biography" section of the profile . . . could I?

While I'm at it . . . has any thought been given to allowing easily-implemented HTML character entities in posts?

That one is on our list

by sMoRTy71 In reply to linebreaks

We have that one on our list of things to add. It drives me crazy trying to read bios right now.

Thanks for the suggestion,

I added a brief note about my new second job in my bio, and had to start pruning words from my bio. 2000 characters seems stingy for a maximum length of the bio, but maybe that's just because I'm full of hot air.

Just one thing I've noticed

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to New profile and contacts ...

Besides the already mentioned ones is that you no longer have the ability to delete discussions that have become dead.

I suspose there is a limit of current discussions that are allowed it's just that I would hate to see one from 2 years ago crop up and loose a current topic.

Bug Alert

by house In reply to New profile and contacts ...

The discussions list is not updated as often as some would like. I'm not sure if that is directly related to your CNET friends, or if the list is only updated at regular intervals.

I noticed that it was in real time before, is that still the case?

We're working on cacheing schedule...

...because all this data can't be made with live calls. We'd smoke the database. So there will always be a slight delay in some data points, but we're tuning to keep in manageable.
