Norton AntiVirus cuases Word problems

By maxwell edison ·
I have a computer in a small LAN that has been quite problematic in one area. The bottom line is this: When Norton Anti-Virus 2000 is installed (with current virus definitions), Microsoft Word documents open and respond very slowly ? but only some, not all Word documents. Moreover, there is not any apparent commonality with these Word files, at least none that has been obvious to me. In addition, the locally installed printer responds slowly as well. If I uninstall Norton Anti Virus, both the Word documents and the printer behave normally. There is another computer on this LAN that is identical to the problematic computer, except, of course, its location in a different office. I have no such problem with that different ? but identical ? computer.

Both of the computers are (were) as follows: AMD 300 K6 processor with 128 MB RAM on an Asus P5A Super 7 Motherboard, ATI graphics card, 3Com NIC #3c905b-tx. Windows 95B. The printer connected thru LPT1 is an HP 722c.

I tried swapping printers, and both computers behaved as before, one good, the other problematic.

The problematic machine has been replaced several times with various hardware configurations, the most recent being an Intel 733 Pentium III on an Asus CUV4x motherboard, ATI Rage128 graphics, 3com NIC.

Whenever Norton Anti Virus is loaded on ?this person?s? computer ? regardless of the computer configuration ? the Word documents (some of them) and the printer are slow to respond. Remove NAV, and the problem goes away. The only thing I can think of that I haven?t tried is to connect to the LAN with a different cable and/or connect thru a different port and/or different hub. That doesn?t make sense to me, but stranger things have happened, I suppose.

Constructive comments, thoughts, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me for questions, clarifications, etc. Comments will be added as necessary.

Norton AntiVirus cuases Word problems

by John_Smith In reply to Norton AntiVirus cuases W ...

I've seen this before and I don't think it's a Norton antivurus problem. It may be a coincidence that it only seems to happen with Norton antivirus installed, or maybe this is just another one of those "bug quirks".

However, there's a Microsoft article that describes your problem. Here is a link to the article.;EN-US;q167081

Here's the article.

When you open or close any of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, the program may respond slowly. Also, when you open or close a document in any of these programs, the file may be opened or closed very slowly.

This problem occurs if Microsoft Outlook automatically creates journal entries for these programs. Microsoft Outlook creates entries for these programs by default.

Note that this problem may occur even if Microsoft Outlook is not currently running.

To work around this problem, turn off the journalizing featurefor the Microsoft Office 97 programs. To do this, use the following steps:

Start Microsoft Outlook.

On the Tools menu, click Options.

Click the Journal tab.

In the "Also record files from" list, clear all of the check boxes.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Office 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 97 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).

I hope this helps.

I have to wonder why I didn't find that article. I searched high and low for something like that, but I guess I didn't look inbetween the cracks! Thanks for the help.

By the way, what's that "user deleted" all about? E-mail me if you know.
