NT Net login Service won't start

By brat ·
The error message that I am receiving is referred to in TechNet, q234655, which states, "unable to log you on because the Netlogon service is not running." The fix is to install service pack 6a but I can not log onto the server to install the service pack. Steps to error message, the server locked up and I lost the boot record. Next, Modified the boot ini so repair could be preformed. Any suggestions? My next step is to replace the SAM file through a client on the network. I can not afford to loose any data on this machine!

My answer isn't as hi-tech as some of those above, but it might be less hassle. If you have another machine(s) that can see the server you can't log on to, you could copy your critical data over to that other machine (you don't need to be logged on to a server in order to access its files off the network, obviously), then just start fresh with an NT install after your data has been moved. You might want to copy your data in this way in any event, as a safety measure.

OK, i guess we have two problems here:
1 - Data cannot be lost
2 - User cannot logon to system

As for #1 i recommend getting a copy of a disaster-recovery utility called Tiramisu for WinNT it can read trashed FAT/FAT32/NTFS partitions AND copy the data to another media, do a search on your favorite search engine with "Tiramisu" and "Windows".

As for #2, i suggest making a full backup of the system and then reinstall NT to another directory, choosing "Standalone Server" so you can work locally on the machine, recover your data/files/whatever. After this you can try booting your initial NT install and see if it's OK, else go on and rebuild everything from scratch...

Good luck

You said you performed a repair on the installation..right?Well their are a few files you dont ever replace after SP4.Perform a parallel installation & apply the same SP you had in the first one. Then copy these files over to the original then you should be able to get in(http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q196/6/03.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0).
