NT Server(PDC) Goes off the network

    Locked

    by mazhar ·

I’ve a IBM Netfinity 3500 M20 Server acting as a PDC. All of a sudden the Server is off the network though when I access the server directly, I find it’s working fine but unable to either authenticate logon requests nor provide file sharing to clients trying to access it. When I restart the server, everything is back to normal till sometime and again the same problem crops up. There are no error messages in the event viewer too. I’ve tried removing and adding services, reapplying service pack 6A but nothing works. Also the HP Jet Direct print server on the network goes off the network and I get the status message as offline and I need to switch off and switch on the print server to get it online. Is there any solution to this or I’m thinking of formatting and reinstalling NT completely. The server has hardware level raid 5 installed.

      First, Check event viewer

      Then-Check network physical connections

      Third-Change NIC/Driver

Hi, I’d hestiate in installing nt again. The server seems to be functioning fine, albeit connections are being dropped. Try checking and double-checking all cable connections – server to hub/switch, etc. You also may try running diagnostics on your nic card(s) – a flaky one can cause all kinds of hard-to-identify problems (or switch out the card with a known good). Also, check power – if using a UPS, check its log and test it to be sure it is functioning properly and guarding the server, etc. should there be a second or two of power loss. Your problem sounds related to hardware in this case and not software (e.g., nt OS itself seems okay). I don’t know what kind of cabling you are using, but a cable analyzer might be helpful (and network monitor as well – looking for patterns in dropped connections). Hope this helps.

I had a problem that was similar and found that it was a cranky switch. You have 2 separate devices that are having problems, what is common to both (or is it coincidence)

Check your Nic Card Settings on your server make sure they match up with what is on your hub. If your Server is set to AUTO/AUTO and your hub/switch is set to 100/Full that can cause problems. Also it may be a problem either the port on your hub/Switch or your network card. Try moving the drop cable to another port on the hub, if that does not work maybe try and replace the network card.

      See if that helps.

Next time it “dies”, try rebooting any connected switches/hubs, there is a good chance that will fix it, and be your REAL problem

I agree with the other suggestions that this is a network problem rather than a server problem. Since it is impacting two devices, I think I would be looking at the hub/switch and the cabling. If it were only the server, I would first try swappingout the NIC and installing a fresh driver.

The most direct answer is going to come from a packet trace, if you have access to that information. But if you operate from the assumption it’s a network problem and look for link lights, mode (half versus full duplex), speed, etc. I think you’ll find the problem.

I agreed all the answer but I can think another thing.
      Have you reinstall TCP/IP protocol?
If you are using DHCP server then you can release TCP/IP configuration.

      Good Luck,
