If your intention is to completely do away with the previous NT configuration and be running ONLY Windows 95, then you will need to do more than fdisk to eliminate the prior NTFS partition.

NTFS partitions are usually not able to be deleted withthe fdisk utility, even though it appears that they are gone when you use fdisk. I have found through many, many hours of fighting with configurations that the 'deleted' NTFS partition resides as a ghost on the system and creates all kinds of unusalbehavior, especially if you attempt a re-install of NT!

There are some good utilities out there for the complete erasure of NTFS partitions, but the best I have found is DelPart. It is simple and it will see partitions that fdisk cannot. DelPart.exe was one that came with the NT 3.1 resource kit. Search the MS site for it. Maybe it's still there. Boot the PC with a DOS 6.22 boot disk and run DelPart.exe.

If you cannot find DelPart, try this: run fdisk and press '3' for delete partition and '4' for non-DOS partition. Then create a
new DOS partition and attempt your OS install after formatting the partition. I have heard that some have had success with this, I haven't.

If you are installing Win 95 only, then use FAT16 (unless the HDD has more than 2 Gigs of space, then you would likely want to use FAT32). DelPart.exe has been available on the net from various sites, but if you can't find it, I would be glad to email you a copy of it. You can contact me @ TimS@uinta.com

Good luck. :)

FDISK can't remove an NTFS partition : it is displayed as non-dos partition, but if you try to remove it, it will tell you that you can't because there are logical drives in it. If you try to remove them, it will tell you that there are no logical drives in it !

Well, maybe it would work with the specific version of FDISK supplied with Windows NT, but I had to turn a former NT server into an autonomous Windows 98 workstation, and I hadn't the NT CD-ROM handy at this time.

I performed a low-level format using a little freeware that fills the lack of such utility in modern BIOS setup menus. It has the additional advantage to restart with a "clean" hard disk.

I currently lost the address from where I downloaded it, but I can get it back, as it was from a friend's web site. Just email me if anyone is interested.
