offline files disappear when synchronizing
Lockedby ssine · about 16 years, 1 month ago
We have been using folder redirection of user Desktops and My Documents on a Server 2003 system for some time now without too much issues.
I have a user working with XP Pro SP2 who recently has been having issues.
He works on existing files offline and saves his changes, but when he reconnects to the network and the system synchronizes, he gets an error “Access to (file name) is denied on \\servername\share and the file disappears from both his local system and the server.
When I view the Offline files under Tools\Folder Options\offline Files\View Files from Explorer I can see the files, but cannot view or copy them anywhere.
I am not sure why this is happening and would greatly appreciate any help.

I have this same issue here and I am trying to find a resolution. Have you figured this out yet?

Not as of yet.
I am hoping to try some experiments with my notebook next week to see if I can duplicate what the user may have done and see if it breaks.
I’ll let you know if I find anything.

fix for files not synchronizing

Here is what I did to fix my problem, I found this on another forum. goto your network connections and disable your network interface card, recreate the file, then re-enable your NIC. You should then be able to sync your files.

Thanks! I will give it a try this week and let you know how I made out.
Did they mention why this happens (user error, MS bug, etc.)?

for files not synchronizing

In reply to fix for files not synchronizing
The user had another incident today (third time in 2 weeks) and going offline enabled me to get their file and save it somewhere else so they did not loose it.
To try for a perminant resolution, once synched with the network, I blew out the offline cache and resynched so there are fresh files.
I also took notice the user’s My Docs folder is 4.54 GB.
The folder that housed your file, would you say it was about the same size, larger, or smaller?
Reason I ask, I am looking into if folder redirection has an issue with the size of the folder that is synchronizing.
Let me know when you get a chance.
Thanks again for the work around.

Things I tried for a permanent fix

In reply to for files not synchronizing
Blowing out the old offline cache did nothing.
Folder size does not have anything to do with it.
Saw event ID 1517 Userenv and tried the UPHCleaner which took care of that event ID, but not the offline file issue.
Saw event ID 3036 Windows Search Service so I took it out of startup and rebooted. Took care of Event ID 3036 but not the offline file issue.
Running out of time tonight, but will try a new user profile tomorrow and see what happens.

Yes, I would agree that size of the folder doesn’t matter as mine is currently weighing in at 17GB. Also it was only a couple of files that would report it for me not my entire directory. Since I followed the fix I have not had any trouble but then again I have since disabled offline files as I need to rethink what I “REALLY” require to be available offline.
Good luck and please pass along any new information.

Is it possible…..

… that the OLK Temp folder is full? There is a known bug whereby people can’t open attachments from within Outlook (connected) because there are more than 99 files by the same name within the OLK temp folder which is hidden and can only be located by looking at a particular registry key to find where it’s at.
Is it possible that the Offline files are affected by the contents of that folder too? If you think it COULD be possible, I can go find that MS article again for you. Right now, I have to get ready for work.

may be possible

In reply to Is it possible…..
I have not looked at the OLK folder, but I would say it may be possible since the user has a habit of not cleaning things out.
I did do a test where I logged the user onto my system (Latitude D820) with the same permissions he has on his system and performed the same functions that I did on his system. I did not have any issues with his files (online and offline) on my system, so it would seem the issue is local to his system.
After doing that test, I renamed his profile on his system, logged in as him, and let Windows create a new profile. When I tested with the offline file files in the new profile, I still had the same issue.
Is the OLK temp folder for all profiles or does each profile have it’s own OLK folder?
Something that I thought about after I did these tests yesterday was most of the company is still using Office XP (2002) Standard with SP3 and I am using Office 2003 Professional with SP3. Is there any compatibility issues with offline files between the office versions?

OLK is fine

OLK is fine.
After logging the user into another different system (not mine or his) without issues, the issue seems to be with the new notebook system (Dell Latitude D830).
I have dis-joined the new system from the domain, rebooted, re-joined the domain, and rebooted to see if there was any issues when I first joined the system to the domain, but unfortunatly did not clear up the issue.
In despiration, I tried a new patch cable, BIOS, and NIC applicatrion (since the driver is the latest) and results were what I expected, no change in the offline files issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, but OLK is fine if you look at the post I put in the wrong spot.
Besides the other stuff I tried in that post, I also checked the firewall setting in the Cisco VPN client which I should have done earlier, but didn’t think of it. No matter, the always on setting was not set.
