Okay, TR – A new pet peeve

    Locked

    by maxwell edison ·

I want to send a private message to someone – but you are limiting my options to a “contact”. And if you’re not, then you’re making it too complicated to see.

Example: I want to send a PM to John Doe. He’s not one of my “contacts”. Why won’t you let me?

    Grrrrrrrrrr……….

        No, but …..

….. it’s the opposite of progress.

I just wanted to send someone a PM, but I couldn’t – not because he didn’t want it, but because TR’s new format wouldn’t allow it.

        Let’s see where it goes.

P.S. I’m not really having a good day. and this just didn’t set well with me.

      That is a confirmed feature.

Last I heard, there may be some sort of modification to that behavior.

I think it could be worse than you think…

Some people on my contacts list don’t feature in the “mailto” dropdown… so either they’ve not allowed peermail, or the system requires a two-way-contacthood…
The latter would be very messed up, since nobody can tell who’s “following” them, anymore, so forming mutual contactnesses with someone one doesn’t have an address for would sort of require “soliciting” on the boards… which is likely beneath most people.

I notice that around the second day.

Personally, I like it. It keeps me from receiving those annoying homework questions from idjits I’ve never heard of.

So add him as a Contact. Of course, he’ll have to add you too. If he isn’t interested enough in your postings to add you as a Contact, he probably wouldn’t welcome e-mail from you.

There should be a feature to notify you when someone has added you as a Contact, and asking if you would like to reciprocate. Maybe that feature is already there and I haven’t noticed it yet. I only update Contacts a couple of times a year.

We’re going to change the contact option to…

      by jasonhiner ·

In reply to Okay, TR – A new pet peeve

a setting in your profile that will be:

      Who can contact me?
      – Anyone
      – No one
      – Only my contacts

      • #2888994

        You’ve never defined contacts

        by ansugisalas ·

In reply to We’re going to change the contact option to…

        Is it:
        a) someone I follow?
        b) someone I follow who also follows me?
        c) someone who follows me?
        d) groups (a) + (c)?

sounds more of what I would be looking for when it comes to contacts.

          I -assume- ‘Contact’

is defined as someone you have chosen by clicking the ‘Add to my Contacts’ link in their profile.

        • #2888948

That’s no longer there, you know.

          by ansugisalas ·

In reply to I -assume- ‘Contact’

There’s just the big blue “Follow” button in their avatar plaque.
And the “contacts” of before may not be the same as the “follower” of today… I find I can’t peermail most of my contacts, Jason included, and I’m left wondering, is it because they don’t follow me? Or is it because they have the option turned off…
          I’d like to know, though.

        • #2888942

          Hadn’t noticed.

Like I said, I only look at Contacts a couple of times a year. So far there hasn’t been time since ‘The Change’.

Say, there outta be a ‘Post Apocalyptic’ movie script here somewhere. “Trapped in a world altered beyond their recognition, a band of tech masters, code ninjas, e-witches, and cyber survivalists struggle to rebuild the web site they once called … Home.”
