On the subject of mugs
Lockedby Jay Garmon · about 18 years, 11 months ago
Long ago, we promised all our TRIs a little thank-you gift for all their help. Well, our prize closet is about to get restocked, so that time has come. (This is not to say there won’t be more gifts in the future, only that we’re going to strike while the iron is hot, budget-wise).
However, many of you never submitted a delivery address, and those that did may have moved or prefer a different address now. In any case, those of you who are willing to pierce the veil of anonymity, simply send me a delivery address (yours, or a “care of” address that you prefer) via private message, and I’ll have your TechRepublic “Smug Mug” shipped out next week.
Also, we’ve been dropping hints about a big prize contest for the last few days, and some of you may wonder whether earning a TRI mug will ban you from eligibility in that contest. Hardly. You are all eligible for the little birthday bash we’re throwing in May, and that means the potential for more mugs or, possibly, a TR-iPod.
Hope to hear from you soon.
–Jay

When the T-Shirt arrived I was rung up by the wife and told it was here and that she was coming over so did I want her to bring the T-Shirt so I could see it? 🙂
When I replied I can’t see any harm in that she promptly wore it over just so I could see what it looked like. Now it’s all stretched in the wrong places for me but fits her almost perfectly and after she’s worn it a few more times it will no doubt be a perfect fit. I just hope it shrinks in the wash so I can wear it. 🙁

It will probably be when you start rummaging through old towels and stuff looking for clean rags, she’ll hand you a slightly soiled t-shirt with a faded TR logo on it.

Nah she would know I’d wear it

She’ll totally wear it out first. I went to a MS Meeting a couple of years ago and was given a T-Shirt by one of the Web Hosting places which she promptly snaffled and the only time I’ve ever seen it since is when she is wearing it.
It is a black one with what looks like a street sign on the back that reads “Increase Speed” She wore it to court when she had jury service and hoped that it would put the people off didn’t work 😀
What is it with women I will wear anything straight off the cloths line without a problem but she insists that I’m not dressed well enough and insists on ironing everything that I wear. Once when I refused to have the cloths ironed she attempted to iron them while they where on me and we have a press here not an Iron so I very quickly got them off and allowed her to iron them.

I’ve been inactive due to the work load lately. On top of that, a few close friends have moved back to town, so I’m rolling with the old crew again.
Thanks folks.

What do you mean, WORK load?
by oz_media · about 18 years, 11 months ago
In reply to Absent for a month….
Just sit your boss down and give him the goods.
“You must appreciate that while I decide to grace your office each day with my presence, it doesn’t actually mean I wish to ‘work’ for you.Take the 15 minutes of attention I give my work each day and think yourself lucky, the IT industry is BEGGING for skilled people like me to help them actually make something of themselves. If you don’t appreciate it, there are millions in line who will!”
As for your friends, just tell them to get a TR membership so that they can also benefit from your friendship. OR do what I used to do, give them your login info for when your busy, it makes for some really interesting discussions and people will never really figure you out because it MAY not actually be YOU. It’s funny to come back after a week of camping to see how many people they’ve PO’d or been nice to that you normally wouldn’t. Then when you get back on, the shift takes place and you leave everyone scratching their heads.
Pretty funny really, but I pretty much hold my alias to myself these days.

The first batch of mugs should go out soon, and those of you who haven’t sent me an address I’ve contacted privately (except Maxwell, whose privacy concerns are well documented).
Unfortunately, I have not reached these two TRIs
HAL 9000 (Colin, your mailbox is full)
sgt_schultz (Peer messaging disabled)I don’t feel comfortable abusing these members’ login addresses without their consent, so if you see them around the forums, please pass the word–I’m tying to mug them.

Walkabout OZ?

In reply to COlin
Now that is an interesting term as what I’ve just been through in the last few days was hardly any fun at all particularly when we ended up in a 14 foot deep ditch back-wards not even the car was anywhere near the road and it took several hours to dig out the car trailer. 🙁
But other than the motor moving a bit on the trailer nothing at all moved so I must have tied things down pretty well the only damage that was done to the car that I was towing was the rubber on the rear bumper bar got broken and a touch of paint damage was done to it by the engine and auto trans sliding back. Not a bad effort since at the time we where traveling at 60 MPH or maybe a bit faster in an attempt to get things back under control which didn’t quite work out the way I planed. 🙁
Actually other than some minor plastic being broken on the tow car which really looks devastating I only lost the rear muffler so over all I think we got off lightly as by rights we should both be dead. 😀
Now if only I had of thought to take a shovel with me to dig the car & trailer out of any problems that we may have encountered. But other than that one incident it was an uneventful trip of about 2,000 K’s each way and even if I was having some adverse reactions to not being allowed to use a computer I’m claiming that the car has a computer controlled engine management system so I never did really get too far from one just no INTERNET for 4 whole days. 😉 But the shakes have began to settle down and I’m slowly getting back to what I was previously. :p
Now all I’ve got to decide if the car is worth restoring or only good for parts but it was one hell of a trip. 🙂

Gotta love adventure!
One of my most memorable weekends was when I threw two connecting rods between Seattle and Everet, WA.
Met a whole bunch of people, they were sure shocked to see Canadian money and stared at it in awe(we’re talking 3 hours from Canada here).
Hung out for a few hours while a friend with a flatdeck came to save us, and then went to a party with a waitress we met at Denny’s. Turned into a pretty cool weekend bash with some powerboat racing, lots of cheap low end beer and we trailered it home on Monday.
Some of the best times are when your car breaks down or you crash in the middle of nowhere and you can’t get parts, it’s amazing what you end up doing sometimes, I love adventures like that.

Good news/bad news
by Jay Garmon · about 18 years, 11 months ago
In reply to On the subject of mugs
The mugs have been sent…to most of you. In my poking and prodding about past mug “no shows” I’ve learned that they can’t be shipped internationally, both due to cost and the fact that the arrive as piles of crushed clay, rather than as mugs.
So, for ozi eagle, HAL, and EdLockett, I’m going to have to send a lighter, more resilient gift: a TR shirt. So, my question to the three of you: what’s your shirt size (S, M L , XL or XXL)?
Lemme know and I’ll send them off ASAP.

Through boredom.
Every time I come back from a day at a M$ meeting I just sit down in a comfortable chair and fall asleep for about 12 hours it really is hard to get motivated to do anything at all after such a boring day. 🙂

by Jay Garmon · about 18 years, 11 months ago
In reply to When you say international..
Canada, for purposes of shipping, is considered “domestic” to the United States (as is Mexico, for that matter). Mainly, It doesn’t get thrown in a storage container and put on a slow boat to the antipode.
You, Mr. Linn, should expect a TR Smug Mug any day now.

In reply to I mean overseas
That now that the US is making the border harder to cross, asking Canadians to use passports to cross instead of drivers licenses(in effect by 2007), that your shipping company doesn’t consider us a separate company.
I can tell you that Canada’s largest shipper, has three shipping types; Domestic, US and International.
Don’t mind me, just a little political rant.
Keep up the good work.

James you should see how things arrive here through the post
by hal 9000 · about 18 years, 11 months ago
In reply to Its ironic
At best the look as if they have been run over by a bulldozer and it only gets worse from that point on. 🙂
Of course if things arrive in a somewhat good condition Customs opens them up because they must have something illegal in them as they where packed way too well. Currently I have a watch coming back from Switzerland and hopefully this time Customs will not be demanding me to pay import duty on it but as it has had a major service and a new Case & Band fitted I’m not holding my breath waiting. 😀

Mail in the boonies

In reply to James you should see how things arrive here through the post
When I first moved here I was sent some DVD’s from a golf magazine/club I was a member of and it was “buy it or send it back”. Being an ilegal marketing format in BC, I decided to keep them gratis.
But the wierd part was when I went to our mailboxes, just across the street really, it was simply left on TOP of the bank of boxes.
Anyone could have picked it up and had $80.00 worth of golf DVD’s.
So now it’s Puro-sooner-or-later to my door or I just pick stuff up when I’m in town, which is often enough I suppose.

In reply to Mail in the boonies
When I got back form going “Walkabout” I found a package containing a Engine management module for a 73 Mercedes sitting on top of my letterbox.
Now this came “Registered Mail” and is supposed to have someone sign for it before being delivered but what made it even better is it is a new unit and is only a little over 5K at my cost price as the owner of the car insisted on having a new one fitted rather than one from the wreckers which is a fraction of the price and available now. This guy was quite happy to wait for 6 weeks for the thing to arrive and then pay the price which in comparison to the Ignition Module is positively cheap. I’m wondering what he will want to do when his Ignition Module craps out as they have not sold one here for over 15 years and there is only 1 left in stock in Germany with an unknown price but it was suggested that it should be a little over the 3 K mark. The newer ones which are almost identical but have 6 wires going in rather than the 3 that are on the original are a little under the 1K mark so I’m confused as to why the older units should be so expensive.
But what really did get me was the way it was just left on the letter box with no one signing for it I wonder if I could get away with claiming that I never got it? 😉 I probably could but I’m unsure just how the insurance works and I really do not need another new one of those things sitting here.
The local mail is fairly OK but anything International is a real mess by the time it arrives here and you just have to love Customs when they open something that has been sent away for repairs and then insist that you are importing a new item and want Import Duty paid they did this about 5 years ago when I had my watch returned from Bulova with everything on the outside being replaced and only the back cover being original. It didn’t matter that there where a bunch of worn out parts in the bag they just insisted that it was a new watch and demanded that I pay the Import Duty which a repair doesn’t attract. You just have to love the bureaucratic mind as it looks new it must be new and you are trying to cheat us out of the money you rightfully owe us. 😀

I’ve offered to make a new one.
by oz_media · about 18 years, 11 months ago
In reply to Mail in the boonies
The ‘post’ boxes are just a bank of tiny little mailboxes made from sheet metal that is spot welded together. Because they are so small, when the package doesn’t fit, they leave it on top. Well I’ve found out that neighbours are the last of my worries, it’s tourists and stuff I don’t want stopping and scooping up my packages.
I have offered to make a special stainless steel box for MY mail and will place it right next to their boxes for carrier ease. I even offered to paint it green just like theirs (painting stainless, oh the shame!), but they have said no way, unless it’s government approved and has a government lock on it the carrier isn’t allowed to use it (but they are allowed to leave your package on top of it ?!?!?!).
Fine then, you know I’ve got more than enough time on my hands and will start looking for ways to get approval and an approved lock for the carrier. In the carriers defense, she’s pretty cool really and has no problem, even if she has to lug another key around, but she said that if she was seen using it, it would be a federal offence. Wouldn’t want that now, would we? :p
OzMedia will win this one though, I promise you. ]:)

Beautiful freakin’ mug guys.
Now, of course… I feel bad because I haven’t been very active over the past few months. I used to post quite a bit from work, but it’s been stupid lately – expanding my worth and taking on more tasks.
PS – Oz… ever been to Fort St. John in BC? My buddy’s been trying to get me to go work for them at IT North. What’s it like over there anyways? It’s further north than Dawson’s Creek for christ sakes.
