Opening an 2007 excel file in excel 2003 generates a read only file

* I create a excel workbook in 2007.
* Then save it to our network
* Other users have the compatibility pack (Sp1) installed
* when they try and open it, they get
* the message box stating “file conversion in progress”
* when the workbook opens in the title bar it says Microsoft Excel – Xl0000001.xls {read only]

Any suggestion on what I’m doing wrong would be much appreciated

Try saving it as a 97-2003 compatible version in save as options and see if it still retains full functionality. The Compatibility tool is pretty Klunky to work with.

And also make sure

That the file extension is .xls not .xlsx when you save in the 97-2003 format.
