Operating system not found (XP)

By tasdisr ·
I have an IBM Intellistation M Pro model 6868sb3
that I wanted to replace the hard drive with one
that I have in an HP Pavillion XT993 since it is larger. When I install the drive from the HP into
the Intellistation, I get the message Operating system cannot be found. If I hook the HP drive up
as a slave I can read the information on it, but I cannot get it to work as the master drive in the Intellistation. I have tried resetting the jumpers on the HP drive which is a Samsung SpinPoint V60 Series SV0602H. Any help or ideas
are much appreciated.

IBM has a diagnostic partition on some systems, you may find that the bios doesn't recognise this partition. If you use a tool like Partition magig 6.0 etc you can check each drive to see if they both have this partion. If they do you can Ghost the original to the new one, careful they are usually hidden. The diagnostic partition is usually where the MBR is kept. You could also just try deleting this partition, and resizing the XP one to suite, don't forget to mark it Active and Primary. A small note also, XP will not run without running a sysprep on it though as it will not allow more than a specific number of hardware changes.

The question is..... Is the OS cannot be found being given by the BIOS or the boot.ini ....

Is the BIOS seeing the Hard drive..?
You can run FDISK to see all the partitions and verify that the BIOS is picking them up...

Hope this leads you in the right direction...

You cannot change drive between computers with xp. It will not reallocate the drivers for the ide drive controllers.

The easiest way is to do an inplace upgrade.
