    PC keeps rebooting

    Locked

    by mtorres7 ·

After installing XP Pro, and installed SP2; XP downloded the automatic updates. After installing the updates, the PC is rebooting all the time. (Dell 8200, 256MB RIMM 800-40, 40MB HD).

Will it boot up into safe mode? If so, click start–run–type in “msconfig” (not the quote marks) and press Enter–click on the Startup tab in the System Configuration Utility window which comes up–click Disable All–click OK–restart computer.

If this doesn’t help, try to do a Repair from the installation CD. This may be the quickest solution, as there are lots of things which can go wrong with an install which can cause this.

Ok, this is a really stupid reply — but when this happened to me, it was because my cat kept rubbing up against the reboot button by accident. Taped a box over it. I like the easy ones.

      Hey there,

Check your RAM module by replacing new one for trial purpose. Defected RAM modules can do this problem. It makes PC restarts after each fix time period or memory stake flows. Try to replace the RAM module to check it out.

Good Luck and don’t forget to post the correct solution for your problem.

you are getting a blue screen error but windows is set to automatically restart on error so you get the reboots. you need the blue screen error. it is probably a driver.
you could try last known good config
if you installed say, a printer driver just before this happened.
you should have a Startup menu choice to Halt system on error, To start in Safe Mode, to go to Last Known config. try those, repost if no joy.
Before i put xp sp2 on a dell or any other pc i visit mfg website, download and burn and install (in your case you only probably could have upgraded the bios) latest bios and drivers.
you can fix the errant driver with Recovery Console once you find which one on blue screen

I’ve experienced this with some viruses that are out there. You start to run the virus scanner and it reboots again. To keep the system from rebooting goto Start… Run and type “shutdown /-A” (no quotes). Then run your updated virus scanner in normal mode and then again in safe mode. Don’t forget to turn of System Restore before your scans.
