Most likely you have a bad memory chip. Switch SIMMs from the working computer just to make sure, or boot from a diskette with device=himem.sys /testmem:on in config.sys. Try also changing the memory access times in CMOS setup>chipset setup.
Could be also a boot sector virus, or the virus protection activated, but in general win95 displays a warning that you should disable virus protection from CMOS setup.
      Also do a
      fdisk /mbr
to rebuild the MBR. Perhaps windows cannot write it properly.

1- Check Your Bios settings and make sure that the disk is recognized and is selected as the 1st bootable drive.

2- Run Scandisk to make sure you do not have any bad sectors that are hanging out on your boot partition. If it finds bad sectors letit mark them as bad.

      GOOD LUCK!!

All your data should be transfered to another drive before proceeding. On the older 486 units you need to make sure that the BIOS can support the drive you are installing. If you can get to the CMOS see if it is reading the drive correctly. Format the drive using the old relaiable fdisk /s command after you have partitioned the drive. The partitioning will create an active partition, and the format will load the COMMAND.COM IO.SYS AND MSDOS.SYS. After that you should be able to load your the drive with a new OS. Good luck!

If you did a recent fdisk and set up new partitions, please make sure that the primary partition is set active in the status.

Most of the answers posted will help. But one you need to check will be that the hard drive is still recognized in the BIOS/CMOS. Sounds like the HDD settings are missing each time you reboot the system. That is an indication the the CMOS battery isbad/weak. Change the battery with the same known good board you mentioned and see if the HDD boots up. Good luck.

Just copy the system files to the HD using a good WIN95 boot disk.

      i.e.
      SYS C:

Did you use Ghost? Sometimes you have to SYS a drive after ghosting it.

Some 486’s have a BIOS that will only recognize up to 500 or perhaps 528MB of a hard disk, even if it seems to be recognizing the whole disk and the appropriate parameters are displayed. You may need to use disk management software from the hard disk manufacturer to trick the BIOS into thinking the appropriate number of sectors and cylinders exist. Western Digital’s is called EZ Drive, Seagate’s is DiskWizard, etc.

      Hi!

If your BIOS supprts the HD then follow theese steps and 95 will boot up.

If BIOS dosen’t support your disk get some disk management software as suggested in previous answer.

      1. boot with DOS disk and remove all partitions.
      2. REBOOT
      3. boot with DOS disk and make a primary partition that is 1024Mb if this dosen’t work try 512Mb instead.
      4. REBOOT
      5. boot with DOS disk and format partition.
      6. Install Win95 and when done Win95 will be up and running.
      7. Now go to dos prompt from Win95 and create any additionla partitions you want.

      If I were u;

I will make sure the hard disk jumper is master.

cd-rom is secondary. (better for performance)

if it’s connected with a Atapi cd-rom make hd jumper master & slave present

I will detect the harddisk from BIOS.

      Save & exit

Boot from Diskmanager. offcourse virus free & protected. also with win95 system. not ontrack bootloader.

      run DM /x

/x option is to avoid diskmanager detecting the Hard Disk Brand because I do not know the Harddisk model also it’s little hard to get exact diskmanager for the harddisk.

use manual installation & create partion.
this will format & transfer the 95 system to c: drive

      install cd-rom if u have.
if u are using diskette version please check for virus with mcafee 4.0 or latest. make sure CD version is OEM or Orginal Copy from Microsoft, other wise check viruses for cd also. (it’s on the internet mcafee.com)

Install & configure your plug & play cards configurations with the utility comes with P&P cards, ex: Creative SB

This Problem has nothing to do with your hardware.
This is a software related issue:
1.) check Format of your HDD (Fat 32 or fat 16.
2.) Did you FDISK the drive and remove the current partition?
3.)Did you make the partition active?
4.)Did you check the drive for a Virus using a Win 95 Boot disk and a Virus Scan Such as PCScan from PcCillian in a dos mode.
And Finally try using this command with FDISK:
      A:\FDISK/MBR
4.)FDsik should be on your Win 95 Setup Disk.
      Hope this helps ypu out.

      NO NO NO NO
go into you CMOS AKA BIOS and change your Boot up order.
It may either not be set to boot C or you have the 3 1/2″ boot floppy still in and it is set to boot A,C or A,CD ROM,C and there is a CD in.
on boot up hit delete or what everit states to enter setup. THAT IS THE DEAL!

The above answers are all good places to check. This may sound a little elementary, but after formatting the drive, did you sys it? Boot from a Win9x bootdisk and from the a:> prompt, just type sys C: then reboot w/out the bootdisk. Hope this helps!

Let’s assume, your HD has write troubles on initial tracks. Try to reallocate starting cylinder of your boot logical disk (C:) from 0 to, say, 1st one (using DM for instance). This may have an additional benefit in protection from damage to your data from e.g. occasional writes staring with CHR 0-0-1.
