PCI Modem Installlation

By nt30 ·
I have a Compaq Prolinea 5133 (an old computer) which I have upgraded by installing a 7.5 gb hard drive from 1 gb previously in the system. And I have installed windows 2000. It is working fine except it has failed to configure the Modem.
I thought the original modem may have some problems since it was old so I tried to install another PCI modem; when I try to install the software from the CD Rom I get an error that COM1 Port "cannot be found".
Although through the Hardware installation wizard I installed the modem and I can see the installed modem in the system but everytime I tried to go online I get an error telling me that the modem is not configured. I have been able to install the drivers through the "Add/Remove Hardware" wizard by clicking on "Have Disk" icon. Still the modem does not configure itself to the system, and when I try to install the full software it cannot find the COM1 Port.

I would appreciate any advice.

Remove all references to your modem through the device manager, then remove your com ports. When you reboot, Windows chould install fresh com ports that have no association with any modems, and then find your modem out there somewhere. If not, trydoing what you did before, then changing the modem setting to COM3. Every software modem I've installed has a problem using "real" ports - guess it wants a "soft" port to go with the soft modem.

Hi first things first your com port 1 is or should be asigned to com 1. I would go to device manger find your modem and then click prop. there you will find a tab for resoources click it, then take the check off use auto setting change the base configureation should be 000 or something to the sort.Any how change to the next no. higher or lower click apply reboot and windows shoould asign a new comport to your modem. rockyolson@charter.net

In addition to the choices above....have we checked for jumpers assigning com-ports on the modem itself?

I was able to fix the problem by installing a Win 98 and removing Win2000
so any tech changes would not have worked.
