Is this some of kind of experiment for a psychology research project to see how many people will actually respond to a discussion that is titled “Please disregard”?

I thought you might be a guy, too. I have no idea what a firestar is so that name is generic to me and could be a male, a female or an it (not an IT, but an it :D). And my eyes work faster than my brain so when I saw your name, I kept reading it as firestarter, not firestar. Guys like to start fires. I’d be willing to bet that 99.99% of all arsonists are male. Hell, I even know of a guy who lives in fire. That would be Satan. BTW, please disregard this post.

In reply to Oh …. you optimistic you …
Do you know about American football? Lemme guess… you’d be a fan of the Washington Redskins because “redskin” used to be another word for native Americans, aka American Indians. (Bad joke) I dunno why they were called redskins. Their skin isn’t red. “redskin” actually a disparaging term for American Indians. There’s been a lot of debate lately from politically correct groups in the U.S. about sports teams and schools changing their mascot/name from something other than Indian, Redskin, Seminole, Cherokee, etc. But I digress…

Reasons for them being called red skin
by stargazerr · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to Diehard fans never give up
#1. They might have been bashed up and their skin instead of turning black and blue … turned a raw red
#2. Maybe their mascot is one of the red tomato like men (in the summer time) of UK.
#3. Maybe they got tired of all these bad jokes and just liked the name.
]:)
P.S Yes, I like American football … The NBA and football are the only two sports I follow with eagle eyes … oh and the India-Pakistan cricket match too (That’s like WAR 😉 )… 😀

Aren’t Indians from India?
by ni70 · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to Diehard fans never give up
I hope I don’t come across as being Politically Correct or harsh. But wasn’t it Christopher Columbus the first to use the term Indian for the Native Americans, thinking he had made it to India? I dunno, I guess it’s just me, but I prefer the term Native Americans or the First Nations. I bet if you asked any native American what their tribe affiliation is they’d probably say Lakota Souix or Cherokee, or whatever their affiliation is. Then they probably say it in their native language and my guess the translation would be something along the lines of “the real people” or “the first people”.

NetAdmin – you are correct. I think it was Columbus who gave the native people he found the name Indians. Columbus was searching for a place called the West Indies. Maybe that is why he called them Indians. But I agree with you. Native Americans is a more politically correct and more appropriate term.

Columbus wasnt ‘searching’ for west Indies … He had set out to search for India, but landed up in West Indies … He never knew where he was ..
Since he thought he had landed in India … he named them Indians

How do you more about American history than I do? :8} My original assertion was partially correct though it was based on an incorrect understanding of the actual events. I took a refresher course this morning and wikipedia was my teacher. During Columbus’ time there was no East or West Indies. There was only one Indies, aka India, aka South and Southeast Asia. Columbus was searching for an westward oceanic route to the Indies. (Contrary to popular belief he was not trying to prove the world was round.) He thought he found them but he landed in the Caribbean Islands instead. Later, the Caribbean Islands came to be known as the West Indies and South/Southeast Asia came to be known as the East Indies.
Interesting stuff from http://www.wikipedia.org:
Christian Europe, which had long enjoyed safe passage to India and China ? sources of valued goods such as silk and spices ? under the hegemony of the Mongol Empire (the Pax Mongolica, or “Mongol peace”), was, after the fragmentation of the Mongol Empire, under complete economic blockade by Muslim states. In response to Muslim domination on land, Portugal sought an eastward sea route to the Indies, and promoted the establishment of trading posts and later colonies along the African coast. Columbus had a different idea. By the 1480s, he had developed a plan to travel to the Indies (then construed roughly as all of south and east Asia) by instead sailing west across the “Ocean Sea” (the Atlantic Ocean). The New World was initially thought to be the easternmost part of the Indies by explorer Christopher Columbus, who had grossly underestimated the westerly distance from Europe to Asia. Later, to avoid confusion, the New World came to be called the West Indies whilst the original Indies came to be called the “East Indies”.
The name ”West Indies” originates from Christopher Columbus’ idea that he had landed in the Indies (then meaning all of south and east Asia) when he had in fact reached the Americas.
The Indies or East Indies (or East India) is a term used to describe lands of South and Southeast Asia, occupying all of the former British India, the present Indian Union, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and also Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, which was last called the Dutch East Indies before independence.
End of today’s history lesson.

In reply to REDSKINS! Them’s fightin’ words!
I have some bad news for you. No team is going to win the Superbowl with Drew Bledsoe at QB. While the Giants are my secondary team, I do not make the statement above based on any particular dislike of the Cowboys. It is a simple statement of fact. I watched for years as Bledsoe had incredible games one week followed by 4 interceptions the next week. He just does not have the consistancy, nor emotional toughness IMHO, to put together a run to the big one. Nothing tore me up more than to see him return to the sidelines following an unbelievable drive capped off with a perfectly thrown pass for a TD, or an interception of a pass 25 yards overthrown and within 30 seconds, he’d have the same sleepy-eyed look on his face. Seemed like there was no fire inside. You see a guy like Brett Favre, or Joe Montana , or Tom Brady get in front of their linemen on the bench and curse them out or high-five them. I did not see that from ole Drew. If he were a dog, he’d be a trusty Bloodhound, not a Doberman. And as far as NFL quaterbacking goes, he is a dog.

In reply to Mark – Voice of experience here
I used to think he was a good quarterback, back when he was with the Patriots. And I was surprised that he never got his job back from Tom Brady. I couldn’t understand why the local sportswriters kept trashing him when the Cowboys signed him. Now I’m realizing why. He’s not a bad QB. But like you said, he doesn’t have the fire and intangibles to win the big games. At least he’s an improvement over what we had last year–Vinny Testaverde. And he was doing pretty good when before the Cowboys’ offensive line got decimated by injuries and started leaking like a New Orleans levee. Jerry Jones needs to quit wasting his money on former college baseball players (Q, Hutchinson, Henson) and retreads (Vin, Bledsoe).

The Pats have had 3 offensive linemen starters hurt this year, yet Brady leads the league in passing. He’s had some bad games, but he admits it and is a real team leader. How else does a second year kid displace a “Pro Bowl” QB and lead the team to their first Superbowl and begin a DYNASTY!
Go Pats, Go Pats, Go Pats la la la Go Pats!!!!

What is the point in seeing a movie you already know the ending.
Beauty find Big Monkey
Big Monkey falls for Beauty
Big Monkey gets brought somewhere he does not want to go.
(Sounds like my marrage so far)
Big Monkey escapes
Big Monkey Finds Beauty
Big Monkey Climbs Building
Big Monkey Falls From Building
The End.Its like the Titanic. I didn’t want to see that movie either. Ship Sets sail. Ship hits Ice. Ship sinks. The End. (Beauty Made Monkey go. Monkey wanted to find a building to jump off.)

In reply to Why it took me so long
That’s my catchy nickname for Mike Holmgren. How long has he been in Seattle now? 5 years? Seems like the Seahawks have been Superbowl contenders each preseason, but somehow fade. Maybe this year they won’t. This weekend will be a good preview. If they beat Indy Sunday, it’ll give the pundits something to speculate about going into the playoffs.

Pretenders not contenders until now
by m_a_r_k · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to Homegrown, not you
The “homegrown” name flew right by me. Flew by me like a Seahawk. hah! Ever since Holmgren got to Seattle, the so-called expert have said the Seahawks will have a good season and are SB contenders. Every year they’ve barely made the playoffs. Why are they so good this year? Other than Shaun Alexander setting the world on fire, what’s different? They snuck up on me this year because I quit paying attention to them years ago. I think they’ll beat Indy for no reason other than the 13-0 jinx. Seems like all the teams that rocket to a start like that fade in the last few games of the season. Come to think of it, the teams with the best records hardly ever play in the Super Bowl. It might be Redskins vs Patriots after all.

ok, how’s this:
Say a standard North American Pin.
A large number of angels
Note: Seraphim and cherubim are most desirable, but almost any angels will do. The garden Anaheim variety of angel should be avoided. One copy of “The Song That Doesn’t End (Extended Version)”
I suppose we could also compare other music …say a waltz, a foxtrot, an “electric slide”, but I think break dancing is completely out.

us_g swapped a leg with someone too. 😉
When I was a youngster, a hammer fell out of a tree (from a tree house) onto my head. The hammer was crumpled beyond recognition. I saw it laying on the ground after it bounced off my head. I only knew it used to be a hammer because my brother (who was in the tree house at the time of this incident) told me so.

Entertainers

In reply to wait.. I thought this was a country that…
I would like to respond to your very valid question. I do apologize for the length of it but I want to try and make sure that I communicate it as best as I can. So please forgive me for the length.
I certainly agree that this is a country that does allow and should allow each person to voice their opinions about the government. A lot of us here within TR have voiced, some even vehemently, our opinions of many government officials, laws, and practices. I am grateful that we can. And, I am glad to listen to other?s opinions even when they differ from mine. However, our audience is not vast?my influence, nor probably yours, within TR is tremendous either. The weight of my opinion is not as great as that of someone who is known throughout the country.
What I?m getting at is that the entertainers have a tremendous influence within a vast amount of the population due to their fame. They have a greater ability to influence a lot more people with their own personal preference which is no better or more correct than yours or mine (unfortunately, there are too many in the general population that is too easily influenced by the loudest or more influential voice instead of processing and drawing their own conclusion through reasoning). They may have more influence due to their fame but I don?t think they are able to reason any better than we are. They are as fallible as the rest of us. But, to give someone like that a greater field for spouting off their own beliefs and influencing a vast majority with their own hidden or open agenda is not good.
I sort of equate this with a cult leader. Take Jim Jones for instance. With his charisma and influence he was able to influence 914 people to commit suicide. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Jones ) A person who wields that kind of power(?) and influence needs to be kept in check.
I teach teens in Bible class. I have to be careful about what I teach and how I teach it because I do not want to lead one of my kids the wrong way by presenting what is in evidence to us and allowing them to evaluate and develop their own belief system. I take this responsibility extremely serious and do everything possible to teach strictly the Truth. (No, I?m not trying to start a debate about what?s Truth and what?s not and I will not debate that in this thread.) I am saying, though, that I could very easily influence quite a few kids in the wrong way. Entertainers can do the same thing.
So, in essence, I feel that people of this type influence needs to keep their personal opinions within their own circle of friends or acquaintances the same as we are here.
I will be glad to read and try to understand your opinion on this dissertation.

Well said, Old Guy
by m_a_r_k · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to Entertainers
And this is the reason that entertainers, athletes and well-known individuals (i.e., celebrities) make great spokespeople in companies’ advertising campaigns for their products. People think celebrities know more than the rest of us or have more sense than the rest of us. They are very influential and they need to be more cognizant of what they say because their words are broadcast to a much larger medium than any of us common people, and their words carry much greater weight.
Some time ago, I was watching some TV talk show and the actress Gwyneth Paltrow was a guest. The discussion with her centered on a pregnancy and the resulting newborn baby she’d recently had. This is a rather common thing among women, having babies. Well, the audience absorbed every riveting word she had to say about her pregnancy. They were literally on the edge of their seat, ooh-ing and ahh-ing about her very normal pregnancy and ooh-ing and ahh-ing about the very normaly baby things that her child did. The audience acted like she was some exalted queen.

It’s not the entertainers that are the problem.
by faradhi · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to Entertainers
The problem is that we do not teach our children how to think, reason, and evaluate the information given them. We are taught from very early on to assimilate and regurgitate. Even in a “hard” science such as Mathmatics, how many of us were penalized not because we got the wrong answer but because we did not follow the instructors method to recieve the correct answer. When I was in school, I was often admonished for giving alternative interpretations on literature, history, and even philosophy. Heck I even had a teacher that penalized me for listing my problems in rows not columns.
The way we teach our children must change. Suppressing the ideas of others will lead us away from freedom not towards it. Further, in a free society it is an inevitable that you will hear ideas you don’t like.
While it is true that the entertainers have a tremendous influence within a vast amount of the population due to their fame. This is not always a bad thing. In fact an entertainer was one of our greatest presidents of recent history. Additionally, one side usually complains about entertainers when they support their opponents. Liberals usually complain when Arnold or Fred Thompson speak out. Conservatives complain when Ellen DeGeneres or Bono speaks out.

It certainly seems that we as a society are ?dumbing down?. However, due to the nature of being able to influence a lot of people at once I don?t think they should be able to. This is called prejudicial influence. And I don?t think that should be done. I think that some of them are abusing their influence (maybe for headlines?). A lot of them need to stick to what they do best and that is entertain.
Of course, in the ideal world, a politician would be voted in on their honesty and ability to do what is best for the country. Not for how they are made to look or how much money they spend to campaign. Well, since we don?t have an ideal world then it?s up to us to carry the torch.

That is the most assinine rebuttal I can imagine. Did you even take the time to read my reasoning for entertainers to not use their clout to push their personal agendas? You asked why I stated they should not use the media to try to sway a greater number of people and I presented some very easy to understand and valid points with examples and all you can say is,”don’t shoot the messenger.” Yes, sometimes the messenger should be shot (figuratively speaking).
I presume this means you think it’s ok for people to use their power to persuade large groups to go along with them–even when they show just how ignorant they are when they open their mouths.
I will state again that if a celebrity wants to discuss politics with their immediate friends and families, the same as the common person, then they should. However, to use the media to persuade great numbers to their own agenda is wrong. And, it doesn’t matter if it’s one that I, or you, agree with or not.

I feel funny calling you that, but it’s your chosen alias. I’m probably old too, compaired to most people here. (I know you wouldn’t ask me my age) 🙂 Anyway, thank you for your concern, it was very thoughtful of you. It being the holidays and all it won’t be until probably Tuesday before the insurance company can evaluate the condition of the car and determine for themselves it is indeed totaled, my son says it is. The accident in itself wasn’t a bad one. My idea of bad is if someone had gotten hurt, which I am glad that didn’t happen, too. A few years back my son was a passenger of a vehicle of which the driver was killed in a head on collision. The guy who ran into them had fallen asleep at the wheel. His own children were in the back seat when he fell asleep. His children were fine, though.
Enough of that. I hope you had a nice Christmas. I did. Talk again soon. -

You did , as we all do, acquire this knowledge somehow, from somewhere. Whether it be from watching others make the mistake, hearing about it,or making it yourself (the ladder of which I was not implying). I realize it did sound that way, and I wanted to clarify what I meant.
You and your son seem to have a wonderful relationship. It’s good to be able to joke around with one another like that.

How do you search old discussions? If you just do a search on “evolution” or “divorce”, you’ll get several hundred irrelevant posts with those words in the body of the message. For example, searching “divorce jdclyde” returns 420 hits dating back to March 10. Who wants to wade through 10 pages of results to find the one post that started a particular discussion?

The Search “function” is horrible
by jdclyde · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to Record for most posts
That is why I had just posted this about an hour ago.
As for the EL and Divorce, I am subscribed to them still. Not subscribed to GWB (it seems) so I couldn’t find it. I suspect it may have even been pulled because I WAS subscribed to that at one time as well?
I have looked for old discussions, and more than not the “search” gets me no where. Sad. Real sad. Please feel free to go to my new discussion and let them know I am not the only one that has tried in vain to find old discussions with the search, but with no luck.
For a test, I did the advanced search. Put “divorce” as MUST in the title and “jdclyde” as MUST in the author, set to search all of TR and it came back with ZERO results. That is a real crappy search.
What is funnier than he11, if you do a “google” search on “divorce” + “jdclyde” it takes you right there! Now THAT is funny. Who do they think they are here at TR? Micro$oft? :^O

My Christmas was OK. Saw some family members that I see once a year (for Christmas). Christmas isn’t what it used to be when I was a kid. And I wasn’t very sensitive to something about Christmas until this year when a discussion got started on TR about Christmas and how Christmas means different things to different people. Or means nothing to some people. It got me thinking that I wish Christmas hadn’t gotten so commercialized and become a non-Christian event. I kinda feel bad for people who don’t celebrate Christmas but have been forced by society into making it something that it was not really intended to be.
I’m sorry. I’m sounding like a Scrooge… LOL

The world is for the most part a very competetive place, which is not always a bad thing. A lot of times it’s easy to get wrapped up into trying to top the previous events (which is where commercialism comes in, the big companys like to encourage, cash in on that) and outdoing the Jones’ (decorations). If we can keep in mind what Chrismas is really about, keep that into proper perspective it probably wouldn’t be such a disappointment when it’s over. And, you didn’t sound like a Scrooge. You sound like a wonderful person, and of course I’d be willing to adopt you. You can be my little brother. 🙂

Man, sorry your family don’t celebrate Christmas since it sounds like you want to. You may need to get yourself a Christmas present.
Primarily my family is spending a lot of time together and just hanging out together. My daughter is home from college. We got to spend time with my wife’s family and we spent some time with part of my family today. We’ll have more time with more family throughout this week. Ahhhh, I’m off this whole week. Sorry, us_geeks. 🙂
My family just bought another house about two months ago so we mainly got each other stuff we need for the house. And, we’re spending time working around the house.

I didn’t get much for Christmas, but it was one of the best Christmas’ I can remember. My son, his girlfriend and his son (that’s right, I’m a grandma) came and we had a nice dinner and exchanged gifts. We had a wonderful time watching my grandson’s excitment over opening his presents and playing with his new toys. He’s four years old, btw. I hope everyone here had a wonderful Christmas as well.

by m_a_r_k · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to But it IS about what YOU get
Like I said in another post here, Christmas was such an exciting time for me when I was a kid. It was the greatest time of year. I love seeing my nieces and nephews open their gifts with wide-eyed excitement. For adults, Christmas is sometimes the only time that you ever see some close relatives or have big family gatherings. But for gift-giving, Christmas just means exchanging money for adults. I give you a $50 gift that you don’t want, and you give me a $50 gift that I don’t want. Or even worse is exchanging $50 gift certificates. haha Oh well, it’s the thought that counts…. 😀

How much Christmas cost this year
by firestar1 · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to Christmas is mostly for kids
A lot of people go in dept for Christmas and mostly think of it in those terms. How much Christmas cost me this year. The difference in Christmas as a child vs. Christmas as an adult, being an adult means being the one who is responsible. The children will all too soon grow up and realize this for themselves. The best bet, start a savings account, (they used to have Christmas clubs)and it would make it easier to set money aside especially for Christmas. Better yet, put in a bit more than you feel you would actually spend and what is left will be like a gift for yourself. Now would be a great time to start saving for next year.

Christmas Cost
by old guy · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to How much Christmas cost this year
You are right that a Christmas savings account or Christmas Club is good to have. We have always tried to buy stuff the kids wanted but they knew from early on that we might not get everything they asked for and that was ok. We?ve always gotten what we could without hurting ourselves and the kids have always understood the importance is not on the stuff. Sure they went through some times of seeing some of their friends getting stuff they couldn?t and probably wished they could. But they?ve always been good about understanding what?s really important. And, ?stuff? is not what is really important.
As far as extended family goes we have always tried to buy something for all the little kids but not for the grown folks. We?re all just happy to spend time together. Plus, that really helps by not having to feel like we have to buy stuff for everyone.
That?s also the reason the commercialization of Christmas doesn?t bother me that much. If someone really gets into just that part it?s ok with me. We don?t get caught up in that because we celebrate Jesus every day. We have fun with the Christmas time fun and stuff but our focus is our spirituality, and in our case, our Christianity, in every thing we do, every day.

It’s great that you and your family don’t get caught up in the commercialism. Everyone is going to do what they will and there’s not much anyone can do about that. But good that your family places the importance in spirituality rather than monetary things. Good that you taught your children the important things in life. WTG on that one!

Let’s not talk about that, getting where we’re going. We should just enjoy the journey there. Personally, I would like to have the mindset that I am going to live forever. I know that is not going to happen, we are not invinsible, but think of it this way… kids seem to think they are, and they seem to enjoy life a lot more than anyone else (for the most part), with the exception of puberty, which we don’t have working against us.

Firestar1, if you are interested in some good discussions on spirituality and Christianity you might want to check out this thread, Death, http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=8&threadID=185145&messageID=1891781
There were some very good comments about Heaven and our spirituality. I don’t try to be pushy with my beliefs and I don’t want to hurry up anything but I am very excited about where I’m going when I die.
There is a song entitled, This World Is Not My Home that says I’m just passing through. I do love my journey and the people who touch my life and whose lives I touch and I cherish each moment of it. However, I still can’t wait to get to Heaven. 🙂 Enough preaching for now–I don’t want to stir anything up right now.
Oh, BTW, that is also where you will get the lowdown on the pink fuzzy slippers.:) 🙂

I am not really a religious person. Also, I believe in reincarnation. I am all for Christianity or any belief that promotes the good in people. I have respect for it. However, I’m really in no hurry to get where I’m going. I used to feel that way, but life is a journey and we still have things to do here. For me there is no rush. For you, I’m sure what your saying is you’re looking forward to heaven, and that’s not a bad thing, either. My family is Christian and we have always celebrated Christmas, but that’s not why I celebrate it. I celebrate it because it is all about good will toward men (and women, pun intended). 🙂 It puts the priority where it should be, on family and friends, people we care about. I had best stop here before I get banned for getting too mushy.

That?s cool. I guess the closest I?ve come to learning about reincarnation is working with the Navajo people in New Mexico. In their beliefs they have different worlds that they go to after death. It?s really interesting discussing it with them.
Every little bit helps in spreading out the good will. BTW, I always stick up for the girls. I like girls a lot better than guys. 🙂 They?re usually nicer.
Yeah, we don?t want to get too mushy here?Riiiight! LOL

Ok, to understand this I had to reread the post from Mark of which I responded to. I didn’t catch the part about it being about a particular thread. I misread or something. I thought we were talking about all of the threads, because earlier you had conducted a search when I was asking about records for most posts. I didn’t mean any particular discussion. I misread what Mark had said. But it certainly would have made an interesting newsletter to send off with the Christmas cards, now that I know what we’re talking about. Um, …actually, I don’t think I was with you guys at that time. I didn’t get to read your thread about the divorce, but as much as it’s mentioned and the number of posts you had going in there it must have been worth reading. Is there any way I could read it? So, you’re a youngster are you? You told me not so long ago that you’re not much younger than I am. If that be the case, I couldn’t possibly be sooo old, now could I? Either we’re both old or both youngsters. I’ll allow you to decide. 🙂

I’m thinking really quickly here to figure out how to dig myself out of this hole that you threw me into. haha Actually, if you’ve read some the crap that I post around here, you’ll see some pretty outlandish over-the-top stuff. The “youngster” quip was only partly in jest, though. You’re only as old as you feel. Even when I’m 85, I’ll call myself a youngster. I plan to climb Mt. Everest when I’m 85. And climbing Mt. Everest is something that only a youngster should do.
Seriously though, yep you’re right. I’m thinking that I’m just a few years younger than you. That should mean that we’re both young. I eat nothing but healthy food and I exercise like a madman and I really do feel like a spry youngster 15 yrs less than my real age. Father Time isn’t going to take me down without a magnificent battle. Maybe I won’t really be able to climb Mt. Everest when I’m 85 but I guarantee that I will able to fall down Mt. Everest when I’m 85. :^O Maybe I’ll compromise and just try to ski down the damn thing.

In reply to Yep that would be cheating
What do you mean the hole that I thew you in? You stumbled into that one yourself. Luckily for you I noticed. You would never have known. And I think snowboarding down the mountain would be preferable to tumbling down it. (Actually, I wouldn’t want to do either). But, if that’s your goal, let me know when you will turn 85 and I’ll bring a video camera. I’m debating as to whether to send it in to “MTV” or try and make some $$ off it by sending to “Americas Funniest Home Videos”. Tough call. 🙂

Snowboarding down Mount Everest
by m_a_r_k · about 18 years, 3 months ago
In reply to Yep that would be cheating
I like that idea, firestar. Snowboarding will give me fewer pieces of equipment to keep up with when I inevitably take a vicious fall down one of the many frighteningly steep slopes. With snowboarding, I’ll only have two pieces of equipment–a snowboard and me. With skiing, I’d have five–two skis, two poles and me. I know all too well how a bad ski fall can scatter your equipment. There’s been times in the past when I looked was a suicide bomber who blew himself to smithereens in the middle of the ski run. Gloves, poles, skis, ski boots and jock strap scattered all over the slope.
“Funniest Home Videos”? I’m offended! How about “Fear Factor”, instead? 😀

If he’s going to go snowboarding down Mt.Everest in the buff, I don’t think it would be appropriate to send the video to “America’s Funniest Home Videos” or “Fear Factor”. I’d have to send it to MTV, for sure. On second thought, maybe I will just market that one myself, bet I could make a bundle off that one. 🙂 And, of course with the profits I would buy Mark a nice warm snowsuit.

While many don’t use a real name, a nick name is always grand! Mine is a combination of initals and a nickname. Works for me. I was going to change it once, but it was halfway though the divorce discussion and I didn’t want to change it during that. A lot of that info and whatever else a person wants to share would be in their profile. Some people want to keep certain things private of course. I’m just browsing around TR prepping for a role in an upcoming movie.

I suppose Aaron can be in my movie. Every hit movie needs a network consultant/site support character. I was going to see if Pee Wee Herman is available, but Aaron will do just fine. He can’t star in it though. I may even consider adding you to the cast. Any part you wanna play? And I do plan to come back from the sun.

I’m using the cannon on New Year’s Eve. It’s going to propel me into next year. But with some tinkering I’m sure I can give it a power boost to propel both of us to the sun. Getting back may be a problem though.
We’ll send the paparazzi to Mars. They’d fall for it hook, line and sinker since you’ve already been to Mars to escape polar bears, fire ants and killer bees.

Uh oh, my daughter’s (who is home from college) boyfriend is coming in today to spend a couple of days with us today. Now we have to go back to Mississippi to take him with us. The good thing though is that her uncles down there are just waiting for him (as in laying in wait!). This could be good. 🙂 It’s hard to find bodies in Mississippi. LOL HaHaHa (diabolicly)

In reply to Jump on Mark …
How did I miss so much activity around here yesterday? I’m sorry I missed it all, especially b/c my name came up in so many conversations. :O I left work yesterday at 5:00 PM US Central time, spent the evening at happy hour and this morning I wake up to see that TR was a blurry of activity in my absence. There’s never much activity in the evening, let alone a Friday. Am I accessing a TR server that wasn’t being replicated yesterday during the day? Or did everyone spend Friday evening TR-hopping instead of bar-hopping?
OK, now to more important matters… This “Jump on Mark” post caught my attention immediately. I wonder why. Unfortunately it’s a bit tamer than my gutterific mind first assumed. So now I have TWO lovely ladies who want my jeans? ]:)
stargazer aka us_g, tell me again what I get in return for giving you Reeboks, Levi’s, a Lexus AND a return to full co-authorship? Seems like I’m getting the short end of the deal here.

If it confuses the confuser then it certainly confuses the confusee. It sure as hell confused me because I didn’t even know that we had a time machine project in the offing. We’ll need to read H.G. Wells’ book before we design the thing. I’m already having to redesign the rocket.
No need to build a time machine to correct the tardy blastoff though. If I start walking west right now, and if I walk fast enough and far enough, I will eventually get someplace where it is still yesterday. 😉 I love how these time zone things work. But it always confuses me what happens when you get to the international date line. (This is turning into a very confusing post). How can it be night on one side of the line and day on the other side?

Bermuda Triangle

In reply to I “had” to tame it down …
I’d like to solve the Bermuda Triangle mystery first. Bermuda is a great vacation spot. And we can search for lost city of Atlantis while we’re there. I don’t know much about Atlantis as a vacation spot though. Probably not much to do there but go deep sea diving and look at wierd sea creatures with no eyes and big heads.
< slaps hand on forehead > I forgot about wikipedia. How’d I do that? Probably too upset that I missed the launch date. Not thinking right.
I’m glad you know H.G. Wells’ book backwards and forwards. I started reading it and gave up after after about four chapters. I was not amused at the thought of trying to read the damn thing again.
BTW, wikipedia has some cool info on the Bermuda Triangle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bermuda_triangle

My gosh, there’s more activity in this discussion between midnight and 7 AM US Central time than any other part of the day. starg lives in Europe so she lives by some other out-of-sync time system. And The Old Guy, being an old guy, lives by the “early to bed, early rise” routine. And also, being an old guy, he has to wake up several times during the night. That was bad. Real bad. Hell, I’ll be in that predicament some day, too. If I live that long. But I gotta live that long. I plan on skiing down Mount Everest when I’m 85, ya know. But I digress… So firestar, what about you? By saving four strokes of the key, you have renamed Stargazer.
I am from the US., and I suppose I do appear to be nocturnal. I have trouble sleeping sometimes at night, thinking over the daily events and my to do list for the following day. I have heard many times to write down your planned activites, forget about them and go to sleep. Tried it, doesn’t work for me. Also, I have trouble with letting go of responsability and allowing someone else to take care of some things, or so I’m told. We all have our faults though,I’m sure. I guess this is one of mine. -

by m_a_r_k · about 18 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Nocturnal creatures
You know the NSA has been eavesdropping on everyone’s electronic communications lately. If they can do that, then they can surely decipher your sleeping habits. I’ve noticed strange things since I heard about the NSA’s little penchant for prying into our private lives. Now I walk backwards so no one can sneak up behind me and tail me. I vary the route that I drive to work. I’ve always cooked my own food so I’m not too concerned about being poisoned. But I change around the grocery stores where I buy my groceries. I watch over-the-air television instead of cable TV. I stopped using the Internet. Tread lightly. The spooks are watching. :O
Since I’m shortening people’s names, your name is way too long. The Old Guy. Can we shorten it to your initials. TOG? 😀

In reply to Nocturnal creatures
I’ve always heard that making lists is a good idea. Helps keep you organized and keep priorities. The simple process of writing anything down helps you think more clearly. Probably because of the thought process required to think about something before you write it. I know it’s a good idea. But I’m too much of a procrastinator to do it. The end result is that I’m an even worse procrastinator. I can’t ever stick to my priorities and am always getting sidetracked. Maybe I have ADD. ?:|

That’s why most people abbreviate it. WTH = What the hell? WTF is similar but worse. Hmmm…. I’m thinking that even using “WTF” in any post is inappropriate. Where did I write that? I’ll edit it out. Thanks. 😐

I like Old Guy better than The Old Guy. The “The” made you seem like an exalted person. Like, “that new nightclub on 5th Street is THE place to go”. I felt like I was supposed to salute whenever I posted a message to you. I’m glad you’ve regained some measure of humility and come back to the level of the rest of nondescript mortals. 😀 And it’s easier to type. And OG are better initials than TOG. (j/k…I respect people’s names most of the time. Unless they have hundred letters or a bunch of underscores. I won’t refer to you as OG.)
Thanks for pointing out my grievous lack of judgment regarding the WTF acronym. My excuse is that I had a typo. I meant to type WTH… yeah right. Well, I edited it out.

And, if you believe that… At least I didn’t tell you that you can call me Mr. The Old Guy, Sir. I thought about it. I do like Old Guy better anyway. That’s more in keeping with what my son calls me. And, he sure wouldn’t “exalt” me to anything that he could get away with. My son and I do have fun picking on each other.
I really wasn’t trying to suggest anything about the initials in the other post.

f = (9/5)c + 32
I have taken more than my share of math courses so I feel pretty comfortable in stating unequivocally that 5 deg Celsius = 41 deg Fahrenheit. That will kill most humans (except me) in a few minutes. I’m thinking that somebody laced stargazer’s Shirley Temple cocktail with whiskey and she misread the thermometer. -

That would be cold even for someone like me. When I was working in surgery we kept it about 62 degrees F.
Of course, now they have me in pool therapy for my back which is set about 82F. Man, talking about wonderful! But, I guess you have to be one of us “old guys” to get that… 🙂

Cold water vs. cold air
by m_a_r_k · about 18 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Brrrr
Cold water sucks the heat out of you much faster than cold air. I’m not sure why. You can live forever in 60 deg F (14 deg C) ambient air but only a few minutes in 60 deg water. A few degrees makes a huge difference in water. Tropical ocean water temperature (Gulf of Mexico, Carribean Sea) is typically around 77 deg F (24 deg C) on the surface (and down to around 40 feet deep). That feels nice. 72 deg F (22 deg C) is very chilly and very uncomfortable. (A typical bath/shower is around 78 F). I bet your 82 F therapy water temp feels like a jacuzzi. Bad thing about that is that warm water dries out your skin and causes aging of the skin. Douse yourself in cool water and use plenty of skin lotion after you get out of the water.
BTW, what happened to your back? Maybe you weren’t joking about walking with a cane. ?:|

Water temp
by old guy · about 18 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Brrrr
That’s pretty informative. I keep telling you guys I’m old. (not quit to the cane part yet but between my back and my knees sometimes it looks like I should have a cane. 🙂
Actually, I do have some degeneration of two of my lumbar vertabraes but the worse problem is getting a little older, heavier, and out of shape. They are having me work on my abdominal muscles to control the stability in my back. The pool therapy makes it easier on the rest of the body and allows you to more pinpoint different muscle groups. The water feels incredibly good. I work out at 6 a.m. because I know I wouldn’t do it after work. Of course, I take a shower after exercise and the PT is in the same building I’m in so that helps a lot on timing.

Old Guy — Your ailing back
by m_a_r_k · about 18 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Brrrr
I used to have problems with my lower back also. My back would frequently tighten up with severe spasms and I could hardly move. Even on good days, I could only bend over far enough to touch my hands to my knees. MRIs found a few injured discs. I had a couple of rounds of physical therapy. Didn’t help much. I finally accidentally discovered the cause on my own. I started to stretch the muscles in back of my legs because I found out that made my back feel better. I kept that up and lo and behold within a few weeks I was limber enough to touch my hands to the floor. Haven’t had any of those awful spasms since. The problem was caused by tight muscles in back of my legs. Those muscles attach to lower back. The leg muscles are bigger and stronger than the lower back muscles. The back muscles tried to compensate for being pulled by the leg muscles so they’d have to pull like crazy the other way. It’s always going to be a losing battle for weaker muscles. Consequently they’d occasionally scream and throw a fit and cause those immobilizing spasms.
What you are doing in your therapy is correct. Strong core muscles (abs and lower back) are more important than bulging biceps or any of the other strong muscles that most people build up for vanity purposes. They are important for posture (which is good for your spine) and when your core muscles get tired, the rest of your body follows suit. You can still do most everyday activities with tired arms or tired legs but not with a tired back. You might have learned all of this already through your PT.
Bad knees, age and extra weight all contribute to an ailing back. Do a variety of core strengthening for abs and back. Not the old-fashioned situps. Those are bad for your back and don’t even do much for your abs. I do 10 or 15 mins of core exercises almost every day. A long brisk walk (at least 30 minutes, 15 minutes per mile pace, at least four days per week) is also good for overall health (even better than jogging as you get older and esp if you have bad knees) and will allow you to lose extra weight if you avoid fatty and high-sugar foods. You’d be surprised how easy it is do lose weight. Just get your heart rate up to about 110 beats per minute for at least 30 consecutive minutes. Low intensity exercise like walking burns fat calories. High intensity exercise like jogging burns sugar calories. When I jog my heart rate goes way up to about 160. It stays around 120 during a brisk walk.
Check out a book called Younger Next Year. It’s pretty good and will tell you how to eat right and exercise right to stay young and fit as a fiddle.
That’s your physiology lesson for today.

Physiology lesson
by old guy · about 18 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Brrrr
Mark, thanks for the info you are absolutely correct. Actually, I’ve worked in Orthopaedics for the past 19 years as surgical assistant and now as IT. We have a Spine specialty department with our own PT department in that. They keep getting me straighened out every so often.
For several years I would come in early and work out on the machines they have here. Actually because of my knees I was using a recumbant bike which is the best for knees.
My problem, which is a lot of people’s problem is staying with it. We moved all of our offices into on location back in August and I got out of the routine. I’m trying to get back into it once I get a handle on the back thing. Again you are completely correct on the hamstrings being tight. That is another of my back problems that we are trying to get stretched out.
Actually, I’m really impressed you have so much accurate knowledge on this. That’s pretty cool!

is to start a healthy and fit way of life now while you’re young and spry and nimble. Otherwise you’ll end up like Old Guy. Or end up as a bunch of titanium parts like me.
Old Guy, I’ve always been interested in this sort of thing. It took me a long time to learn what’s right and what’s wrong, though. And I’m still learning. I’m a typical wannabe jock. Bigger, better, stronger, faster and all that macho stuff. All it ever got me when I was young and foolish was careless injuries. Now I’m a bit older and a bit wiser but I’m sure I haven’t seen the end of my careless injuries.
