    Pop up windows

    Locked

    by nhiep_nguyen ·

Recently (since may be 2 weeks)I got quite a nuisance: Every now and then a “Window – No disk” window pops up with “There is no disk in the drive please insert one”.
Either I click on “Cancel”, “Retry” or “Continue” button it will disappear (sometimes after 5 or 6 consecutive clicks) only for a few minutes then pops up again.
I have disks on my optical drives and my External USB disk is working normally.
I’ve checked with disk management (Win XP PRO SP2)and haven’t found anything abnomal.

Could anyone have a hint as where to look at for eliminating that nuisance?
    Thank you.

Did you recently install any software? I’ve had an installation not complete that resulted in something similar.

I suspect that you are intermittently loosing the connection to the USB drive. If the drive that is listed as having no disk is your last optical drive (highest letter) that pretty much confirms it.

If you have a sound card and have the volume up enough, you should hear the USB device sounds if this is the case.

You might need to change a cable, your USB hub, even your USB port on the PC to correct this problem.

Do a registry check for that drive (ie: “D:”) and see if there is a program that may be pointed to it. It could be something wanting data off of there thinking it’s always available.

The problem is there is no mention of which drive it is, so there is no way to know.

Here is my crack at it. Do you have any new HP devices?

I have the same thing with my HP All in One unit. I bought it a few months back. Installed all software. Since then, anytime I turn on the machine (to print, copy, scan, or fax) I get that same error on my screen. I always hit cancel. I could reinstall the software but other than that, I have no reason to do so.

There is a reference to the floppy or CDrom some where in your system. Run disk clean up, defrag and scan disk. If this dose not clear it up use a program like Window washer it will remove a ton of stuff and your computer will run faster.

Thank you all for your input.
I think that Mavyn and TheChas ideas have something in it; In fact I have one of the two external USB hard disks that are so so and also the disk defrag software that caused me some trouble.
I just disconnect the external drive and reinstall the defrag app, after doing a restore to a previous date and it is gone.
      Thank you all anyway.
