    Power Settings

    When I format a hard drive and install a clean OS in Win XP Pro, the Power Management settings default to Always On (turn off monitor 20 minutes, turn off hard disks never, standby never, hibernation disabled). However when we get a new PC with the OS preinstalled, it has settings preconfigured such as standby 15 minutes, hibernate 15 minutes. I always change the settings so the machine won’t go to sleep, but when a new user logs on for the first time, the default 15 minute sleep settings take effect for that user. There has to be a registry tweak to make the default settings Always On, but I can’t seem to find it. Any help will be much appreciated.

      Turn on show Hidden Folders.
      Set the Power options that you desire. Also the Advanced and Hibernate Options.

      Note You should Use the Home/Office title to set all.

      Open Regedit.
      Navigate to HKCU\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies

      In the PowerCfg folder is a key CurrentPowerPolicy. This is set from 0 to 5.
      It is further determined by a sub-folder, PowerPolicies and the corresponding key (0-5). These have binary values to control all the naunces.

      (back on track)
      Navigate to HKCU\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies\xx xx=Number of the policy you set on your desktop (see below for associations)

      Choose Modify Binary Values.
      Highlight and copy the binary data.

      Load the hive for the default user.
      (highlight HKLM, File – load Hive, Navigate to the NTuser.dat under Docs and Settings\default user). Select open,
      Give it a name.
      Navigate to TempHiveName and expand the tree.
      TempHiveName\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies\

      Open the policy with the same number as you set.
      Highlight the Binary data and paste the new data.

      Power Scheme (Default=”0″)
      “0” = Home/Office Desk
      “1” = Portable/Laptop
      “2” = Presentation
      “3” = Always On
      “4” = Minimal Power Management
      “5” = Max Battery

      The Advanced and Hibernate options are stored in the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\GlobalPowerPolicy\Policies
