So thinly

by santeewelding In reply to Reasoning

You can see both sides at once.

Again: what compels your preoccupation with attitude? In re, do you go bottom up: harvesting words online pointing you in a direction? Or, top down: harvesting those that justify pre-existing suspicion?

I say, suspicion, because that's the strongest word I'll use. It's as far as I can personally go. It is not a thing worth getting out in front of, preemptively, for me.

You?

Sometimes, I think you just dislike it when people address the actual topic at hand.

Of course the death penalty does the same thing

by Slayer_ In reply to On an individual basis, y ...

Well, its meant to, statistics prove that it does not. Apparently violence criminals aren't afraid of dying, so it stands to reason, they don't care if their victim may be armed.

But trying to predict what goes on in a persons head... that seems the problem to me.

But, is the risk higher that, an armed criminal will attack you, or that your child will find that neat gun you carry everywhere, and try it out for himself?

And let's not forget to mention society as a whole, as its important. But why do you feel unsafe, most have never been involved in a violent crime. Maybe its a population thing, more people in a small area, the ratio of crime may stay the same but the number of occurrences increases, you hear more about, people become scared.
But the ratios are still the same.

And finally, if we assume our criminals think logically (unlikely, but what the ****). Then if a criminal assumes their victim is not dangerous to them, they are less likely to injure or kill their victim.

Everyone knows you can't prevent criminals, but maybe we can make them less dangerous. Bring the level of violence down. To me this seems like an attainable goal.

Calibrate

Fine-tune what you have to say about all this and maybe you find -- nothing.

For instance: "criminal".

The only judicious way I see to say, "criminal", comes after conviction by due process. In your screed, I see (7) mentions of "crime" and "criminal". I have no idea (I do; but I am reluctant to characterize your thinking) of what you're talking about. Has to be, though, something about taking law into your own hands, much in the way that you denigrate doing so with a gun.

Minor difference

by Slayer_ In reply to Calibrate

Since we have a max of 25 year penalty for the most violent of crimes, and most get out before that. Most criminals are repeat offenders, criminal in my world is correct in that case.
Its practically a coming of age for some groups to steal a car and run down a few pedestrians. And as long as they are underage offenders, they get away with a slap on their hand.

Maybe tougher gun laws would prevent that. Oh, wait. . . .

If they used guns... Maybe it would

by Slayer_ In reply to Minor difference

But instead they use baseball bats, and fire bombs.
Last year they lit a guy on fire to take his beer.

Fortunately, no one died, unlike if guns were involved.

Unbelievable.

When I get mugged (planning on this weekend) I'll think of what you said. Bring the level of violence down. Yeah, good idea, why hasn't anyone thought of that?

They have thought of it

by Slayer_ In reply to Unbelievable.

Just probably not in Alabama.

Move to some other country if you want to experience it.
