Printer sharing with a Win Vista computer to Win XP on a LAN?

I’m having difficulties connecting to files and printer sharing. I have a Win Vista desktop connected to a Epson Printer. I want the two laptop Win XP computers to see and use files and print sharing. I have tried all connection theory’s none seem to work, including the step by step one. Is there a simple way of connecting and sharing? If anyone has the answers please tell me. Thanks.

Hi,

I am not familiar with Vista yet, but presumably as with all other MS Windows OS you have to activate ‘File and printer sharing for MS networks’ in the network connection properties. It is a service, and perhaps for security reasons is not installed by default in Vista?

Thanks to one and all for helpful hints. It seems though. The 3rd party firewalls like Mcafee and Norton are at fault. Vista, at the moment, when in a LAN envioronment, will function as long as you use the win Vista firewall. File and Print sharing will then be automatically checked, and work when you do the step by step procedure microsoft has allowed. I hope this helps people such as myself who were frustrated…….

I suggest you check not only enabling File and Printer Sharing under Windows Firewall to allow exceptions, also do so under Add/Remove Windows Components for necessary components installations,as well as ensure that under Control Panel/Folder Options/View/Use Simple file Sharing is also checked.

Thanks for all your input. The problem seems to stem with 3rd party firewalls such as Mcafee and Norton. It seems in Vista its best just to use Microsofts firewall.

When an operating system only allows the proprietary security tools you are selling to execute ANY function, and not competing security systems, it’s an operating system problem, or more accurately, a “sales tool” for the operating system seller. My Son had this same problem for over a month. Then I found an article about this problem. They recommended to download VISTA SP 1 beta (not fully done, but it works) so my son did this and it worked . . . .

We had this issue at work with a Vista desktop and an XP pro desktop. We found that we had to set each PC with the same user IDs and passwords (i.e. “User ID 1” and “User ID 2” on both machines).

Then set up the network normally.
