CD or CD Drive?

by Alpha-Male In reply to PROBLEM INSTALING OS ON N ...

Have you verified the CD is clean and works okay? Test it in another system. Is it an original (legitimate) disc? Have you tried other media?

You may have a problem with the CD/DVD drive....especially being older. Check your configuration hardware wise (master/slave) - check to see if it's set for cable select and consider changing that to test.

One last thing you may want to look at is to check or replace your IDE cables.

Good luck, hope something here helps.

CD/DVD jumpers (sometimes Cable Select will cause this in some configurations), hard drive, mother board.

This could mean a corrupted OS or a hard drive failure. It means that Int19h failed to find a useable MBR and could not boot the system. Try booting from a boot disk and see if you can access the hard drive from there.

see if you can copy contents of i386 folder on CD to the HD then install

by sgt_shultz In reply to PROBLEM INSTALING OS ON N ...

from the hd. if your xp setup disk is marginal as suggested by previous poster, this method might work for you.
if your xp setup disk looks good upon inspection, i'd see if I could try another cd drive.

make sure the HDD is formated

by alphatech9 In reply to PROBLEM INSTALING OS ON N ...

Is the new HDD formatted? Some of them do not come formatted, I've seen this a lot.......

Of course check the basics (plugged in, proper jumper setting etc...) then I would reformat.

I would run a delpart CD or similar and make sure the HDD is clean and ready to accept an OS.

Wrong OS?

by d.s.williams In reply to PROBLEM INSTALING OS ON N ...

I notice you're trying to install XP.
Maybe that is the problem and the PC is just trying to protect itself? Have you tried another OS?
(sorry, only in German)

Not that 2000 is necessarily any better:
