Problems with Firefox

By jardinier ·
For quite some time now, Firefox version 3 has been crashing so frequently that it is almost useless. It loves to crash when I am in the middle of writing a post. Each time it sends a crash report but nothing changes.

Firefox 3.5 is too top heavy to function on my main computer which has Pentium III 1 GHz and 320 MB RAM.

So I am using Flock which seems quite stable. Is anyone else experiencing problems with Firefox?

BTW I have found it is possible to download earlier versions of Firefox (2.0 for example) if required. I cannot detect any improvement in more recent versions.

superseded

not "superceded". The verb supersede is from Latin and means "sit on top of". Flock is sitting on top of Firefox.
The verb supercede, if we had it, would mean "yield on top of".

"1GHz and 320MB ram"

That's above the minimums required for WinXP. DOS and DOS with Win3.0 could run on an 80286 computer with 16MHz and 4MB RAM back in '**. My first computer was an 80386-40MHz, 120MB HDD and 4MB with MS-DOS 5 and Win3.1, first Win95 computer was an 80486-80MHz with 32MB RAM.Berton

Not quite

My first computer was a Kaypro 4, running CP/M, with no hard drive and two 5 1/4 in floppy drives.

From there I upgraded to my first Windows computer which indeed had more specs than yours. It had 386 SX CPU at 25 MHz, and 4 MB RAM.

I have resolved the problem

by jardinier In reply to Problems with Firefox

Version 3.5 certainly won't work on the computer I mentioned, so I installed an earlier version. While browsing through my Start Menu, I noticed there is an option to start Firefox in safe mode.

This works fine giving me full functionality and it never crashes.

I have waited until now to post this because I thought the discussion had died. But I was alerted to new posts and so here I am.

Incidentally minimum specs for XP are Pentium MX 333 CPU 128 MB RAM.

I am running it, including SP 2, on a P III 500 MHz and 128 RAM. It was running fine until I decided to connect to internet, hence anti-virus and anti-spyware. Now it is deadly slow but it doesn't matter as I use it only for word processing. I like collecting computers.
