Proxy Server 2.0 User cannot access web

    Locked

    by mhill4 ·

This is a stumper. I have a Windows NT 4.0 Server with Proxy 2.0 loaded and configured properly. I connect to the internet with the administrator account from the server and can access web pages.

I setup the Proxy 2.0 permissions on my normal user account. I Setup the IE5 properties to point to the proxy server for resolution.

Logged into the server with my normal user account I cannot get anywhere on the web. Connections time out, etc.

I login to my win98 box on the same network through the proxy server with my normal user account and I then can get to web pages.

Looks like on the server something is being blocked.

This is a new problem for me. I have been using Proxy server 2.0 for about 6 months, and 1.2 for a coupleof years. I have successfully been able to use this config many times before. But this time?????

I have had a similar problem in the past. To fix this I deployed Proxy Client to all work stations and let IE Detect the proxy settings. If I told IE where to look I received connection timeouts etc.

      Hope this helps

I had a similar issue with NT and Win98. I ended up loading the MSProxy client from the Proxy server. Then I made sure I had none of the settings in the Browser for Proxy servers. So, no proxy, no detect settings, etc.

Then everything worked fine. I also had a linux system, and since Proxy is SOCKS, I only used the proxy settings in the Linux Browser, and left it at that (only web access) until I put in my full firewall.

Make sure both the Web proxy service, and the winsock proxy service are both running and active on the proxy server (In the MMC).

On the client, in IE, make sure that the proxy IP (or hostname) is in the correct area. Do NOT have IE try to auto detect it! Do NOT use an auto configuration script. I’d probably use the IP address, rather than the hostname.. just in case Wins (or DNS) is having a problem resolving names.

You might want to install the winsock proxy client (located on the proxyserver at \\proxyserver\msproxy ) This will allow all other apps to go thru the winsock proxy service on the proxy.

Lastly, I would make sure that Service Pack 1 is installed on the proxy server. This will help with alot of known issues.

      Hope this helps.

Start with the obvious first. You must check if can Ping ourside of your network. If not, Traceroute to see where the packets are going. You can Ping you DNS and gateway to see if it is working. Then ping probably yahoo.com or traceroute yahoo.com. If the connection is ok, you can then start troubleshooting your Proxy.

Normally if you are logged in the PC, where the proxy is, you do not need to configure the proxy setting. You must connect without the help of proxy. If everything goes well, check workstation’s connection to your proxy. From worstation ping the proxy server.

Set the permission of the services of proxy, FTP to Everyone–Read access, WWW—Everyone Full Access.

      Hope that helps.

“NOLD” in answer #4 gives you the start point for your troubleshooting. Answers #1 through #3 give you change options. This should be enough to point you in right direction. I ask for/need no points for this response.

      Smooth Sailing …:)

I would focus more on routing and here is why. Depending on how you have your gateway setup for your external interface it may continue to send traffic the wrong direction or to itself. You may have to use a persistant route to fix this problem.

This sounds more like a permissions issue with NT NOT Proxy. Generally, regular users are VERY restricted when logging into servers so I would start looking there. As a previous response stated, I am not looking for nor expect points as I am not offering the fix but suggesting where to look.
