Re-partition win98 to install NT

By anatoly.goldberg ·
On win98 box I used Linux fips.exe to reduce FAT32 partition to make another partition for NT. It worked o'key. Then I split again that new partition in 2 - total 3 partitions, because NT requires < 7GB for its setup. I tried to format it with fdisk, and got FAT32 system again. NT installation failed in the new 7GB partition. Any advice?
It appeared that fdisk was unable to see all my disk space.

you dont use tools in dos anymore , you are in windows nt now. You have to use the tools in there.
go to start, programs , administrative tools, disk administrator. you will see the rest of the partition in there and you can create a extended partition.

next time post a comment or contact me via email. my good ratio answer is going down because of these kinds of back and fort questions and answer. next time contact the person and when done you rate the answer.
Obviously you are new to nt ,I would suggest you to buy a book or better yet head straight for w2k since nt won;t be supported any more by MS after 2003/2004.
I am going that road myself. If you need more help I can give you a headstart.

remmber that 3th partition has to be fat if you want to see and use it in both OS.
win9x doesn't read ntfs, winnt doesn't read fat32. (w2k does see fat32.)
if you just want to see those partitions in the other os you can use the utillities from http://www.sysinternals.com (they provide only readonly capabillities.
another thing to remember is that win9x will see c,d(if d is fat, which is partition 1 and 3) and winnt will see c,d,e. (partition 1,2,3)

Re-partition win98 to install NT

You have created one primary partition of 2 GB and one extended partition of 2 GB with one logical partition of 2 GB . Rest of the 26 GB is left as unused space . What you should have done is to create the extended partition of 28 GB with one logical partition of 2 Gb in it ...that would leave 26 GB usable space in the extended partion and you could use FDISK to make more logical partitions on it . You can now do two things ...

1. You can use the disk admin in NT to create a FAT or a NTFS partition on the unused space ..which will only be accessible from NT . If you want the new partitions to be visible to win98 then you need to do the following .

2. Boot with a Win98 startup disk and type sys c: at the command prompt to restore win98 on the primary partition .You can delete the extended partition ( including the logical partition ) using FDISK which will also remove WinNT . Recreate an exetended partition of max size available ie. 28 Gb . Create a logical partition of 2 GB within the extended partition and format it with FAT . Run WinNT setup again an reinstall WinNT on this logical partition . Now you can run FDISK as and when to create more partitions or even Disk Admmin in WinNT to create more FAT partitions which willbe accessible from both win98 and winNT .

I hope it is helpful

Good Luck !!!!
