    Remote PC Support

    Locked

    by rmessner ·

I am looking for a tool to help provide desktop support to clients who are in another location. I don’t want PC Anywhere, but would like that type of program. Preferably something similar to what all.com uses. Any ideas? I wouldn’t mind paying for a service to use that would enable me to do this.

      Check out Callisto’s Orbiter.

For simple pcAnywhere type remote control, you can use Microsoft NetMeeting, which is build in to Win98 and/or can be downloaded for free.

The particular tool you end up selecting will be heavily dependent on how many clients you are supporting at how many sites.

This is something that cannot be adequately answered in this format; but I would be glad to help you put the plan together (assess, design, implement, manage).

Contact me and we’ll get it worked out quickly…

Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a nice freeware program distrubuted by AT&T Laboratories. You can remotely control the computer just like you had physical access. VNC can be downloaded from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

I have used Intel LANDesk to good effect. It has auditing and inventory functions as well as the capability for remote control.

try Verase. You can download it from http://www.verase.com. It is an inexpensive remote control package. I use it fairly regularly.

      We use Funk Software’s Proxy.
We have 1 Master and 100 host dialing in.
You can buy in any combo. You must have 1 master, then how many clients you want to dial in. You can control what they see on there screen. This is great stuff.
      http://www.funk.com/proxy_p.htm

You can download a 30 day demo.
      Very little load on Server

Check out http://webex.com. We use their OnCall product which allows Application Sharing and Desktop control via the Internet. All that is needed is a browser and a small plug-in. It is a hosted service and works very well. Low administration and very easy to load and use.

You might want to take a look at a program called Proxy (no, not microsoft’s proxy). You will be able to control and reboot systems by modem, TCP/IP, and IPX. I have had great sucess with it.

There are two more options that have been neglected here. If you have a Novell network then you can always go with ZENworks for Novell. It has remote management and can push application installs. You can remote execute programs as well. That one hasworked pretty well for us. However, our help desk software by Blue Ocean software also has that capability. Not only is it help desk software but it has the capability to remote manage desktops. You can check that out at http://www.blueocean.com. So with this option you might be able to kill two birds with one stone.

The best remote support solution I have seen is SupportNow by Netmanage. SupportNow gives you remote access to a remote computer by giving you a bitmaped image of the remote desktop. It has a server that uses the normal http port 80 so it can getaround most firewalls. The product is much faster than pc anywhere.

I will probably be booted out of TR for this, but MS Systems Management Server 2.0 is the total package; remote control, remote install, software inventory, and more. It is more expensive than PC anywhere, and the other products listed below (‘ceptmaybe Citrix), but it has high functionality, and is worth the time, if you have the need for all the functions.

good luck, VNC is your best remote control option, but no file transfer capability.
