Remote Users and Outlook

By Zakiya ·
I have several remote users using Win 98. I have an WINNT server with Exchange. They use TCP/IP as the protocol and Dial Up Networking and a 56k modem to log on to the server. The users are able to connect to the Exchange server with no problems. My problem is once they are on and try to bring up their mail, it takes from 5 to 15 minutes to open up. Is there any type of configuration I am missing for the system to retrieve their messages faster?

Tip 1 for sure!
Also, which version of Win98 are they using? If they have only the original version, either upgrade them to Special Edition or use Windows Update and the System update of that.

Sounds like a problem we had. Outlook client finds Exchange through name resolution so the answer about a host lookup works. We fixed it by cleaning up our WINS server, giving Exchange a static address and being sure DUN was set up correctly. Tryconnecting and pinging your server by name. ALso try tracert. You may be surprised.
